My 1897 dates to 1908. I disassembled it and gave it a well needed cleaning. I did not carefully note the position of the mainspring tension screw. Is it meant to be screwed all the way in to it’s seat or is it meant to be adjustable? Also, what type of lubricant works best for the action of this great old shotgun?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Jim,
The screw is not meant to be an “adjustment”, so it needs to be fully tightened. Any lightweight machine or gun oil will work perfectly fine, with moderation. Only use very small amounts of oil, and only at the friction points.
