I have an 1894 model that I would like to restore, but the problem is that it is in ROUGH shape. Between all the work to be done, with a new stock, barrel and magazine, the cost has been quoted over $6K. Although the rifle has sentimental family value, I dont like the idea of changing the barrel and so many things, since I get the feeeling it leaves me with a new rifle, but not “my” families” rifle.
I am now thinking of restoring the stock as it is now, or going with a new stock, if need be (I can probably do that work myself”, then polishing as many dents as possible and re-blueing (rust Blue) the barrel, re-stamp the markings, re-blue the rest of the parts that were originally blued, and case hardening the receiver and parts that were case hardened.
My questions are:
1. Does anyone have experience with Dave Norin Restorations or Old South Restorations (Dyersburg TN) ?? If not, what would be the next step down in price from Turnbull ?
2. As far as the stock goes, It is rough, and has a large piece next to the butt chipped off. It also looks like the stock was cut down for a shorter person, since it is missing the steel butt plate, or its cut-out, OR this is not the original stock at all.
If I get a new stock (which the family does not want) Which supplier would have the best ones? Not fancy American Black Walnut (since this rifle never came with burl or swirls when new)
Stock seems blotchy due to Laquer Thinner still evaporating…

How do I insert pictures, I read the instructions, but do not see the button to add directly
As a WACA “Guest”, you do not have the ability to directly upload pictures to the forums. You will need to follow the instructions for posting a link from a photo hosting website.
