I have an early (s/n 3543) Model 1894 that I am rebuilding. The barrel and mag tube will be replacements, and some other period correct original parts had to be purchased to put this back together. So, we are not talking about preserving an all-original Winchester.

The markings on the upper tang (Model 1894, -Winchester-, etc.) were either sanded off or wore off over the last 130 years. All that’s left is a single “-” at the end of the tang closest to the stock.

My question to the group is should I get the upper tang re-engraved? If anyone has done this before, can they recommend someone to do it?

Mark Douglas at Wyoming Armory could explain the cost/ability.

I highly suspect that it was buffed or sanded off.  This is what it should look like.

Following up on this, the guys at Turnbull will re-engrave it for me for <$500.

I’m also trying to work with Mark at Wyoming armory. I think he’s busy and can’t get to email and I’m busy and can’t get time to call.

I’ve said before that I would love to put an original, period correct barrel back on this first variant receiver.

The following is listed on GunBroker. If I can get this for about the same price as I would pay for a new barrel, am I committing a major foul to part out this guy? I just want to make sure I’m thinking about this correctly.

Either way my rifle is going to be a rebuild. I’m wrestling with the benefits of old barrel in questionable state vice new barrel.

Anyway, I appreciate anyone’s thoughts or guidance on this. I’ve got 10 days to mull it over or let the decision on the GunBroker option be made for me if someone bids it up too high.

What is your goal with the rifle you are rebuilding?

If you are trying to “restore” your rifle. the rifle (and its barrel) on the Gunbroker rifle is too far gone to clean it up and use it (in my opinion).

My goal is to put back together my Model 1894 (s/n 3543) with authentic period appropriate parts so that it is complete and to factory letter specs. I have everything on hand except the barrel. Ideally, I would like the ability for it to be shot every now and then; but would be willing to accept a wall hanger.

If I went the Gunbroker route, I was going to harvest the barrel and put it on mine. The rest I would look to sell off as individual parts.

Understanding that my rifle is a rebuild to match the factory letter, from a pure value perspective does the old original barrel vs new barrel have any significant impact one way or the other?

Fred,

In my opinion, that old beat up barrel on the Gunbroker rifle would not add any value to your rifle.  I would be inclined to have a correct barrel made and fitted, and restore the rest of the rifle.
