I bought an 1892 .44-40 grey rifle off of GB one day…The intent was to get it customized in a specific configuration that I couldn’t really afford as an original (or want to spend $$ on). The SN is 267038. It was a standard 24″ round rifle that had the mag tube replaced, receiver “cleaned” to a white and the wood was just OK (has extra plugged holes for a swing swivel). I bought it, added the Lyman No 52 tang sight, shot it some but never could quite find any ammo it liked (or maybe the shooter was the problem). Some time later, I contacted Mike Hunter. I don’t call this a restoration as it was not put back into its original condition. But Mike did a masterful job on my customization. It took about 1 year…which is what he quoted me. Craftsmanship is well worth the wait. So I will provide some before and after pics. The after configuration is a straight-grip X-figure checkered stock, steel shotgun buttplate, 30″ octagon barrel, case hardened small parts, Marbles No 5 globe front, Lyman No 6 rear, Lyman No 52 tang & all parts with a period correct marking. At the risk of increasing Mike’s workload, I just want to show off what an artist can do.

I don’t usually care much for restoration, but that is a great looking rifle. I really like the wood and the 30″ barrel. This will make a very fine shooter for years to come. The only thing I would have done differently, is keep the crescent rifle butt plate. I personally, am not a fan of shotgun butts. Still a fine looking rifle.
