Does Kroil work, without bluing damage, on the later sight hoods ? My concern is the metal type and bluing bond on the later ’94’s

Bill,

I have never tried it on Post-1963 production Winchesters… primarily because I refuse to own one of them. That stated, bluing does not “bond” to the steel. Instead, it is a form of oxidation that develops on the surface of the steel when properly treated. If the hood is steel, and it was blued using the hot-salt method, the Kroil should not damage any of the bluing not affected by rust. Last comment… replacement sight hoods are cheap.

Kroil used with fine bronze wool is my favorite. Remove any wood and let the Kroil sit overnight. I have never had it harm the blueing.

Bill I use it all the time.  No reason to get too much of it on the wood.  Like Mark said Kroil or another gun oil with copper/bronze/aluminum wool can clean the surface of dirt and oxidation.  Use plenty of oil and light pressure.
