Hey guys………..just got my hands on a mechanically excellent condition Model 37 in 16 gauge. It’s a red letter gun with a pigtail lever so that’s telling me it’s a first year gun which makes it from 1936. Bluing is in very good condition as well. This model 37 also has a unique steel stamped band around the front of the barrel that acts as a hood around the bead as well……don’t know if this is a factory accessory or this was installed as an after-market part. It looks like it’s been there for a long time. This hood appears to help frame game birds when in flight rather than just trying to protect the front bead sight. The only issue is someone butchered the stock. Looks to me that someone a long time ago cut about 5 inches off the butt end of the stock to make the firearm better fit a child. When the child grew up, it appears that someone glued the hacked off chunk of stock back on. You can see excess glue and marks on the stock when it was placed in a vice while the glue was setting up. I’m hoping to find a gunsmith that specializes in restoration repairs. The stock is beautiful so I want to keep the original wood but if this boneheaded repair could be “helped” at least the firearm will have the original stock. My feeling is “what happened to that stock happened” so to me it doesn’t make sense trying to find an original replacement, install that stock, and act like everything is correct to a unsuspecting buyer if I decide to sell it. Any suggestions or recommendations for an expert stock restoration guy would be appreciated.
