just  got a fairly nice model 62, looks like somebody put some shellac on the stock, it is half worn off what would be good to take the shellac off and not damage the finish under it? Does not look like screws have ever been touched or they were very careful.    terry

If it is shellac you can use denatured alcohol.  Shellac flakes are mixed with alcohol to make the finish.  If it is varnish you might try lacquer thinner. Please no sanding.   Test the finish, you may be able to just re-coat over it?

I am not a collector of these guns.  My guess is that if it isn’t an oiled finish it is varnish.  A 62 collector should help you out.  If you send me pictures of the stock I can post them for you.  [email protected]

I used a citrus based stripper on my 1952 DOM M94 to remove an opaque stain from the rear stock. I applied the stripper twice. Leaving it on only a few minutes at a time. It did not damage the original finish. I did apply a little of John Kay’s pre ’64 oil finish to even out what was left of the original finish, which. When done matched the original and untouched front stock. Good luck!
