i have a receiver with slight rust pitting and it is case colored. Will Kroil harm in any way the vividness of the color ?

No, it will not. That stated, anything you use with the Kroil to remove the rust will negatively affect the case color finish.

By “finish” do you mean a coating over the actual metal color ?

What Bert is saying is what you use to scrub the rust with i.e. steel wool or brass wool etc wetted with the Kroil. Kroil by itself will not harm the finish.
