I inherited my mother’s hunting rifle. When I went to shoot the rifle, I noticed that the hammer would not retract all the way back when I used the lever action to chamber a round. The hammer half sets and then I need to thumb pull the hammer the rest of the way back in order to pull the trigger and fire the round. No issues with chambering, firing or ejecting the round.
I had someone with low to moderate knowledge of lever actions tell me that he thinks I need to replace the sear.
- Any thoughts from those more familiar with the Winchester 94 platform on whether this is symptomatic of a sear issue or could it be something else?
- Also, if I need to order a new sear, are there any other parts that it would be a good time to also replace while I am in there?
- Any recommended websites to purchase parts?
I appreciate any and all thoughts and suggestions as I am not familiar with lever action rifles.
Thank you
Most likely it could be a worn sear. It could also be a problem with the notch on the hammer, or wear on the top of the hammer. It could also be wear on the underside of the breech bolt. Before trying to find a replacement sear you need to disassemble the action and find out what’s going on in there. The bottom line is that the bolt traveling over the top edge of the hammer is not lowering the hammer enough to engage the sear.
