I have a well used but nice 1942 Winchester 1894 that when cycled won’t allow the carrier to fully drop and therefore slightly prevents the loading gate from opening.
if I open the bolt slightly and then close it then the loading gate will open to load.
I have examined the carrier and it looks fine and undamaged and I have replaced the carrier spring, but still no fix.
Any ideas as to my next step?
I’m thinking that maybe there is too much wear in the slot in back of the carrier. If I’m not mistaken when the action is closed the lever pushes the carrier down. Retracting the bolt raises the carrier and the lever pushes it back down.
I bought an old 94 30-30 rifle that would not function and I guess someone tried to fix it and filed in that slot. I soldered a shim in there and it worked out okay. Maybe try a different carrier.
