I had a weak moment and I bought a very nice 33 Winchester.

The bad news is someone parkerized the whole gun. I really is hard to look at.

I am going to refinish it and was wondering were the locking blocks blued or left unfinished.

Also what parts were case hardened?

Any help would be appreciated.

Its a solid frame light weight.

From the 1886 Winchesters I’ve owned, I would say the locking blocks were first blued, then all of the wear flats, as well as the top and botton, were polished bright.

Thanks

I was afraid the words parkerized and refinish had gotten me banned.

Even I had to light some candles and say a bunch of hail Mary’s on this one.

Apparently you didn’t buy this gun for it’s looks. No sin in that, we’ve all been there. What are your plans for restoration? Will this old rifle go hunting again?

Mike

Yes this is one of my winter projects. I have been changing my mind about how far to go. Right now I am thinking about case on the lever, hammer, and blueing the rest.

But may color the receiver.  I do my own prep work and have some good friends for both finishes.

And yes it will go hunting as do most of my winchester.

Used a 92 and a 94 on two antelope this year, and a different 94 and another 86 for two deer.

Have hunted for years with nothing but old Winchesters.

I really enjoy it and have brought the price of meat down to about 75 dollars per pound.

Best Regards,

Have no idea what you’re talking about! Can’t begin to calculate how much money all my reloading, casting and meat processing equipment has “saved” me, lol. OTOH my brother will only hunt with my handloads, quite often with rifles I’ve given him and most of my hunting for the last several years has been as a guest on his lease.

Glad to hear the old girl has hunting in her future, can only wonder about the hunts she’s been on over the years. Please take pics along the way and keep us posted on your progress, Dominic. I take a couple of my old Winchesters hunting, need to do it more often.
