I have a 1885 manuf. in 1887. It has a single set trigger that works some of the time. Does anyone know of a gunsmith that can work on this rifle?

Mike,

If it works sometimes and not others, it most likely just needs a very thorough cleaning. Start by backing the adjustment screw out a few turns to see if it will consistently set. If it does not, then the next step is to remove the lower tang and the attached set trigger and clean it very thoroughly.

Bert- Thanks for the response. My gunsmith had the trigger apart, and thinks parts have been replaced/altered down thru the years. He could not figure it out. I think I need someone with more experience on the 1885. Will the trigger from the Winchester or Browning reproductions work as replacement?

Michael,

Unfortunately, there are not many people out there who know how to fix a Winchester set trigger that has been messed with.  No, the Winchester & Browning reproduction rifle triggers will not work in an original Model 1885.

No, there damned sure are not, but if Michael inquires at the ASSRA site, someone there might come up with a name of a person who’s done such work.  One of the names I recall hearing in connection with such specialized work is Dan Zimmerman, owner of D.Z. Arms, & a Grade A good-guy by all accounts.  Or if he can’t, maybe he can suggest someone else.
