I have a Winchester 1873 3rd variation 32-20, date of manufacture 1903 that appears to have been worked over way too many times in the past.  Thanks for helped me in other posts to try and get this firearm back on track.

I removed the toggle links and I am trying to determine if they are the right ones for this model and if so are the indentations from excessive ware from the pins or from someone for reasons unknown drilling them out? Also I do not understand the extruding post/pin on one of the links.

Thanks,

Phil

Phil,

That pin on the left toggle activates the firing pin retractor. I can see there is a fair bit of wear on the pin but other than that they look ok. The most common problem with toggles is the center hinge breaks and they get loose.

Don’t know anything about the .22 caliber Model 1873’s but all the others had only 1 toggle link design.  You can check the toggle links by removing the cover plate and leaving the links in place.  With the finger lever in the closed position the 3 pins on each side should be perfectly aligned in a straight line.  Also check that the rearward thrust on the links when firing is borne by the rounded edges of the toggle links and not by the pins.  If both these conditions are not met you have excessive wear on the toggle links.
