I have a few new old winnies that have come in to my possession and am currently going through them. This is an old 32-20 from 1887 I believe. Octagon barrel and such. I’ll post some pics when I get done looking at them and cleaning them up.
Anyway the half cock won’t engage on this one. I suspected that was a hammer or sear issue from my experience with SAAs but needing to verify which it is. Not sure if that is a visual thing or if its a replace it and try it thing.
Anyway here are some photos below showing how the notch rides over the sear. They may not be any help, but thought I would ask in case anyone could supply some assistance in determining which issue it is. Please ignore the dirt and rust, I haven’t cleaned it a bit yet.
Is this a set trigger? The set trigger uses a fly to help slide it over the half cock notch on the hammer, that notch is fragile and it’s shape is critical to proper function. The fly can stick so it’s permanently lifting the sear over the safety notch. The fly can wear so it no longer lifts the sear over the half cock notch resulting in a broken notch. First clean it up, if you see damage take it apart and take some pictures. The set trigger has to be original in shape, size, and position to work properly. T/R
That is a hammer for a set trigger. The sear and the half cock is half the width of a standard hammer so its real fragile. I would replace it with a standard hammer if your going to shoot the gun much. With the tang out like you did in the last pictures set the hammer into the half cock and see if it drop all the way in. If it doesn’t then the half has to be opened up to match the profile of the sear. you need to make sure the fly is good as well.
