Any finish should not have any lumps or chucks in it. Sounds like its old was frozen.

It’s neither very thick nor has chunks in it. It sounds as though it came from a container that didn’t have much tung oil in it and and the large ratio of air to oil started to cure it.
The ideal pure tung oil container is a collapsible one that keeps the oil to air contact at a minimum.

You’re right!!…it says PRE-FROZEN-CHUNKY STYLE on the can
Good call! Contrary to my investment strategy oil is cheap and wood is expensive. Chunk it and get good stuff!
I got the right Tung oil, the correct 100% mineral spirits and mixed the 1-1 ratio. Started with alkaline dyes added to get the correct color for 6 coats and then switched to the mixture with no dyes as the wood was getting a bit dark. I rub on a little bit, wait 30-1hr minutes and rub it again, and let it dry. I am on about 10-12 coats by now. the finish looks very good , but it dry’s very flat with just about no sheen. I could wax it and get some shine, but was thinking I would like a low luster with the finish first. What am I doing wrong here that I am getting no shine at all? Help is appreciated. Thanks, Peter
