Hi Guys,

I recently purchased a Model 62 in almost new condition. The serial number is 850596, when I ran this number on our web site it came up as unknown. On close examination with a light and magnifying glass I noticed the number 56 plus an inspectors triangle stamped on the front face of the receiver, could the number 56 indicate this rifle was manufactured in 1956?

Graham,

What you have is a parts clean-up rifle. Technically, it is a Model 90 receiver, with a Model 62 barrel. It was assembled in October of 1938. The “56” is an inspectors stamp, just like the triangle.

Quite a bit of discussion going on, on the Rimfire Forum about these parts cleanup M62-A’s. Tell us more about your rifle? Big Larry

Reduce the size of your images to under 1 meg and you should have no problem posting the photos yourself since you are a member.

Graham,

It might just be the camera, but it appears to me that the rifle has been refinished.  Can you post clear close-up pictures showing the Winchester Proof marks on the frame ring and barrel?

Graham,

Unfortunately, the receiver frame has been polished and reblued.

Hi Bert,

Darn! Collecting Winchesters is a big learning curve, every time I visit this great site I learn something new, thanks to my great fellow collectors.
