You are absolutely correct! The good news is that he has acknowledged that information and is not trying to pass this off as an original Nimschke.

For him to come here and ask advice, then take that advice and advertise this here as a "Copy",(we could argue on my wording), to me shows upstanding character.

I believe the current owner brought this rifle forward before.  He inherited it if I recall.  Originally, I think he had wondered if the engraving was original LDN and we were able to help him clarify it wasn't.

I am offering a Winchester Model 1866 rifle, serial number 117528, with 24" octagon barrel, full magazine, highly figured deluxe-style walnut, and extensive Nimschke-style / New York-style scroll engraving with an LDN-type mark.

This rifle is **not represented as documented L.D. Nimschke work** and is not priced as an authenticated Nimschke-signed firearm. It is being offered as a very attractive, high-condition engraved 1866 with fine period-style hand engraving, strong visual presentation, and excellent wood-to-metal fit.

Seller-stated details:

* Winchester Model 1866 rifle, SN 117528
* Handbook date reference indicates 1873 production
* 24" octagon barrel, full magazine
* Barrel address and configuration appear consistent with the serial/date range
* No visible indication of barrel replacement
* Bluing is very strong overall, with natural wear/age near the last few inches toward the muzzle
* Bore shows clear rifling with mild imperfections/depressions but no obvious pitting
* Crown and front sight are intact and clean
* Highly figured deluxe-style walnut with extremely tight wood-to-metal fit
* Buttplate serial number ends in the same digits as the bottom tang serial
* Approximately 1" hairline crack at the top tang on the right side of the stock
* Extensive scroll engraving with punch-dot backgrounding and LDN-type initials
* Reportedly formerly from the Ladd Hellenbrand collection, who purchased it from Walter Earls
* Cody records reportedly do not document this serial number, which is consistent with limited surviving Model 1866 records in this range

This is the excellent 1991 reprint of early Winchester Repeating Arms Company catalogues. This is Volume V and starts in 1894 and finishes in 1895. Contains information and prices on firearms, ammunition and accessories offered by Winchester. Rifles covered in this volume include the Model 1866, Model 1873, Model 1881 Hotchkiss, Model 1886, Single Shot, Model 1890, Model 1892, Model 1894, Model 1887 shotgun, Model 1893 shotgun.

These Armory Publications reprints are out of print and very hard to find. This Volume V is near new.  A little shelf wear on the back cover.  $85.00 post paid to the lower 48.  Extra for Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, etc.

If you have Orangutang-length arms, that might work for rifles of less recoil. My experience with slip-ons was they needed a non-flexible butt to keep them from twisting off the line of backthrust. My very limited experience in that respect was with a 3" magnum 12 gauge I'd borrowed. 

I think Garrett has the right idea - one for show and one for use. 

One of these days - maybe even before I assume room temperature -- the Model 70 collector community may wake up to the post-63 African's unique qualities. 

The differences between the 1962 and 64-80 African do exist but they are minimal, the only mechanical difference being the 1964 action. The barrel length was reduced to 22" and an additional crossbolt was installed. The chief cosmetic difference i see most often is the wood becoming straight-grained and unfigured. I believe the reason for the crossbolt and straight grain wood was because the earlier African had a bad tendency to split or fracture its stock. 

The two-piece bolt does need to be pinned. 

The 64-80 African stock was a custom job, hand fitted, hand checkered and finished by a local stockmaker. It never suffered excessive fitting gaps and impressed checkering.and overall quality was at least as good as the last pre-64 Supergrades. Mine was made in 1980 and it is a fine example of what Winchester could still do when let. 

I'll let the late, great PH Harry Selby have the last word on the post-63 African. When his Rigby-built Mauser 416 wore out its barrel, he had an American client buy him a new post-63 African and used it to back up Safari clients for the several years it took Rigby to rebarrel his 416. When it finally came back from London, he sold it to a collector and continued using the African. 

His response to catcalls about the push feed action:  "Just don't shortstroke the bolt."  

About the supposed inadequacies of the 458 Winchester cartridge: "With handloads, the 458 is adequate for anything in Africa." 

The attached images are of a 1967 vintage African, not mine. The finish quality did improve through the Nineteen Seventies and my 1980 vintage rifle is nicer.
