I can guarantee that at least one will sell... the unfortunate flip side, several other items may find their way to your trunk for the drive home... 🙂 ps... that's a very nice group of 71's. You have very good taste. cheers! Ben

During my 35-year career at Leupold, I met so many wonderful people in our industry. At the time I was working, we had independent sales representatives who sold our products to distributors and large retail accounts. G.B. Stumpp Associates was our rep for our products in the north east. In one of my conversations with George, he told me that he had assisted Herb Parsons in the mid-50's for a period of time at his shooting exhibitions. Always a fan of the history of our industry, I was impressed. George told me to look for something that would arrive in the mail, and a couple of weeks later, I received a package. In the package was the Winchester/Western shirt, four Winchester target coins (one shot by Herb), and the letter you see in the photo. I have decided to pass these pieces on to someone who will enjoy them as I have. Please contact me via email $250.00

Hi Al-

I do not believe that's a Winchester sling. Wrong brass frogs... Should look like Jeff's pictures I put above.

There were several name-brand manufacturers of leather slings back then, Brauer, Red Head, Boyt, etc. Some used the same staples, some the same frogs, some the same embossing, but none that I'm aware of used thhe exact same combination of features as Winchester.

Of course, I don't consider Winchester's slings to be of particularly high quality... I particularly don't like that they used two-rivet frogs on 1 1/4" M1907 style Target rifle slings. For actual use I prefer the three rivet milsurp slings (and commercial copies)... The Winchester slings are only interesting because they're WINCHESTER!!!

My CFO says I have been out of control the past year. She says a retired guy has no business buying $30k worth of rifles and handguns without selling anything.

So, to keep the peace, I agreed to list my three M71 here on WACA, knowing you guys will sympathize with me and refuse to purchase!!

These M71 are the only model and caliber that I have more than two of...so they were a natural choice to blurt out as I was searching for an appeasement.

Most of you here know these rifles better than I do, so I will summarize what I have, post a few pics, and offer to email more pics to anyone interested.

Two points I need to make: I am not selling to get $$ to buy something else, so I am not needing to sell (other than to stay out of trouble). And I am not trying to make $ on a flip.

I am willing to sell at least one of these for a fair price to both parties, but am ok with keeping all three.

If that sounds a bit flakey, just remember I am trying to keep the peace, so have to at least make a reasonable effort to find that middle ground.

From top to bottom in the pics:

Two rifles are near twins, 1957 and 1952 vintage with receiver sights. The '52 came to me with the swivels (I believe they are called Super Grade?).

The third is a 1947 vintage with the bolt peep.

The '47 has seen more use than the other two, but I have to say I really dig it the most (even though the '57 was built the same year I was).

Overall, to my eye, the '52 is in the best condition of the three, although all three are in very good shape.

I left the pics large for high resolution, apologies if the mods need to shrink them.

1957 - $3,600

1952 $3,800

1947 - $4,000

I know you guys will be honest with me if you think I am looney. I will not be offended. I am still learning! Prices are plus shipping and insurance. Happy to do ftf in MO, all laws to be followed, of course.

Hi Para-

If I have the time later I'll take some proper pictures of a 3269 sling. In the meantime, I think these pictures are Jeff's. These are of the M1907 style 1 1/4" Target Rifle sling, BUT the details are common to all of the Winchester Army Type and NRA Improved slings.

The key features are: 1) Single embossed edge on the leather strap; 2) Two rivet frogs with rivets EXACTLY as shown; 3) Two blue "diamond" shaped staples in each leather keeper (no regular staples or stitching); and, 4) NO maker's mark. Winchester used several leather goods suppliers over the years, but prior to 1964 they didn't even put "Winchester" on their slings. Any sling, whatever it looks like, that has a brand stamped on it was not a Winchester sling.

As for finding some... The challenge is that they are NOT marked. So mostly you have to know what you're looking for, since the Seller usually will not. Of course this does make them no more expensive than a comparable brand name sling. Most of the (probably Winchester) ones I've found came from eBay. Of course I don't think I even have a "new" or "mint" one on any of my M70s, let alone any "spares"...

Best,

Lou
