It is not marked. The Winchester Book has one exactly like it listed a a Winchester Sight used on large caliber rifles like the 1886. It is in perfect shape and I bought it for a reasonable amount. I was thinking of putting it on one of my old 1873’s. I have a few 1886’s but they are modern. Winchester says these were used at the turn of the century. The book says this sight was discontinued in 1932. The Europeans were having international competitions as early as the late 1860's.  The US got into it in the early 1870's.  Some of our sights are improved versions of the English or German sights.  The 1874 Sharps long range target rifle has an English version of the windgage with spirit level sight.  Sharps then made there own as did Ballard.  Winchester at some point made their own that look very similar to the Ballard. 

The English sight was then made by, I believe, an American manufacturer.   

When I can I'll take a pic of the English sight and find the later manufacturer's name.

But I did not find anything about the Field sight.

To possibly narrow down a locality where this sight could have been made, the rifle, I believe to be a Remington 1 1/2 Rolling Block in .32 Rimfire, was used extensively in informal Schuetzen 200 Yard matches on a range located on a farm near Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. Mostly in the first half of the 1900's though the club started shooting such matches about 1896 and continues today. The locality however, may have nothing to do with the manufacture of this TJ Field marked tang sight as mail order was very active by then.

Not sure that it is a "poor copy"  but it sure looks similar to the Stevens Pope tang sight. Pg. 257 to 259 of Rowe's book.  Pope worked for Stevens for awhile.  I'll pull out my Pope book and see if Fields is mentioned.

In all fairness even the sights that seem crude by comparison are often quite cleverly made. I know very little about sights but I always enjoy seeing the precision work and engineering that goes into these little machines. Thanks for posting the additional pics, hopefully someone will have some information for you. Period outdoors magazines seem to be good resources for identifying something like this.

J. Field rather than T. R. Removing the sight almost caused me some panic because upon removal I lost the detent for the stem vertical position. However, after looking underneath I saw what looks kind of ingenious. A tiny leaf spring that lays almost flat loses it’s tension when the sight is loosened. Reinstallation by carefully tightening the front and rear screws equally, brought back the detent. It’s not unfair to call this sight crude but must be paired with ingenious to really describe it. See photos.

Very new to this form but let me compliment the admins for providing a simple and straight forward way of posting pix!

]]> Wed, 29 Jul 2026 01:14:44 +0000 Ben on Mystery Tang Sight https://winchestercollector.org/forum/winchester-sights/mystery-tang-sight/#p182096 Winchester Sights https://winchestercollector.org/forum/winchester-sights/mystery-tang-sight/#p182096 I did a full review of Tom Rowe's American Rifle Sights book and came up empty.  There is a another maker with an elevation wheel on the staff, it's George Schoyen... but it's not a match.  I owned a couple unmarked sights with that same elevation wheel... never did discover the maker.  I really appreciate Pope sights, both period and reproduction.  They are wonderful works of art... while this one is a bit cruder, I could never come close to matching it's construction.  If you remove it from the rifle, please post pics of the bottom along with the name.  Thanks for posting!  Ben
