Don,

There are no ledgers for the Model 1912.

The number can be no more than 5-digits. A 6-digit serial number beginning with "440" would be a Model 12 versus a Model 1912.

Thanks Bert.

Hi Graemia, Yes I can help you with that. As it happens Winchester used up old stock to supply 20 inch barrels instead of 18 inch barrels but only in Australia and New Zealand. So I need the barrel length and the barrel address when you send photos. You can Private Message me if you wish or direct email to keith.nix@nixenco.com.au or post the photos back here. See my post No 28

I live in Brisbane, and presently in Townsville so will not be on line for another 12 hours

I agree there are more numbers, I was thinking the serial number would contain four or six digits but it's hard to tell from the picture. Now I agree the faint "0" appears to be centered on the receiver.

Of the (108) Single Shot 20-ga Shotguns that I have found and documented thus far, (64) of them are Take Downs, and none of them have a second interchangeable barrel. With the only option being a different choke, there was very little reason to order a second barrel. Of the (108) found thus far, (90) are FULL choke, (10) are MOD choke, and (8) are CYL bore.
