Erin-

Suggestions? I’m in a bit over my head so I’m going to proceed slowly and cautiously. I had to replace the left extractor in my last 1897, not my idea of a good time but we all survived. Hope I never have to use reproduction parts again.

Mike, Your slow and cautious is a good approach. When dealing with a blow up like yours I would suggest getting your mechanical issues squared away and then worry about beautification. My 2 cents worth is examine everything closely under magnification. If all the parts pass the visual inspection move on to reassembly. This is where you will find out if you have tweeked or other damage to your parts that is not obvious to the naked eye. (won’t fit, bind, Not functioning, etc.) After you work through this, test fire out of a weighted lead sled with a loooong string. Wink Check your Firing pin, extractors carefully. These parts are the most prone to damage from high pressure.

Anytime a stress is applied to a metal part; pull, push, impact, vibration, or what ever, it’s a cycle. I assume that when you pull the trigger and feel the recoil so do the metal parts in the gun. A new gun has no recoils on it but if you shot it 100,000 times ever part in it has 100,000 recoils. The weaker the part is made and the more stress applied causes more fatigue. A broken firing pin or spring is a common fatigue problem. Fatigue might not have been a factor in Mike’s problem but how long and how many times can you shoot a gun without a problem is something to consider.

In 1973 when small aircraft where manufactured in large numbers the companies making them thought the planes would last 15 years and maybe 4000 hours. Today the same aircraft are still flying and some have 15,000 hours, maybe crashed and repaired twice, tied out in the elements to shake in the wind and corrode. The designer did not see that coming. Do you think Winchester thought when they built Mikes gun it would get that much use over the next 100 plus years? T/R

Metal fatigue explains the failure of a moving part, but does it apply to a stationary part like the rcvr?  Makes me wonder if the same damage might not have occurred to a low-use rcvr if subjected to such a premature detonation of the ctg.

I think the pressure created causes all parts to be stressed at some level.  Even if you can’t feel or see it.  Add a problem and then all kinds of bad can happen.

I think Turnbull will be at the Dallas Safari Club show this weekend. I’m thinking about heading that way with a basket case. He’s probably seen worse.

I think you should (dressed appropriately), though Safari Club seems rather a strange venue for his work, but certainly a concentration of high-rollers such as you’d not likely see at the average show.  (I remember him from the old Syracuse show, where he first began displaying his work on a modest couple of tables.)  Wonder how Safari Club is faring, now that Africa has been turned over to the Africans, with the result that extinction looms for the major game species, outside a few protected park enclaves where only poachers enjoy hunting privileges.

I went to the DSC show a few years back, had a good visit with Doug and a couple of his guys including his engraver. Good guys. Even joined SCI for a year or two. Ran into Doug at the 2021 Cody show. I think he was a bit more at home in Cody but the “high rollers” like his products. I saw some custom gun and knife makers there last time, from what we see on the auctions we watch I suspect their business is good.

I was thinking the .45 with antique ivory would be a nice touch.

Looks like I’ll be putting that 1897 back together myself. Action parts are in my sonic cleaner with a generous helping of Simple Green. Scenery at DSC was awesome, as usual. There were even a few nice guns to gaze upon. Wink

I think a lot of DT’s work but apparently he thinks a lot more of it than I do. Fair enough, maybe he was having a bad day.

Did he gasp when he saw it?  Or point you to the nearest dumpster?

I warned him that it was a basket case. He started shaking his head when he saw the receiver. I had another receiver along but that didn’t help. Would have made dramatic “before” and “after” pics.

Mike I’m really glad you are OK.

This is an example of what can happen when you shoot old guns.  You never know when something will give it up.  That’s why I stress to not shoot hot loads in old guns.  Not that this is what you were doing.

This is something that should always be kept it mind.  I think about it often and it always comes to mind when letting others fire one of my old rifles.  I know some shooters at the range are truly thrilled for an opportunity to shoot a 100+ year old rifle.  That gives me pause as I can’t imagine how badly I would feel if an injury occurred.

Mike – I too, am glad no harm came to you.

Thanks, and that brings up a good point. Even if no one was hurt if someone else had been shooting it they would have probably felt bad about it letting go when they pulled the trigger. My Model 12’s get passed around almost every time they show up on the trap field. My 110 year old Black Diamond Model 12 probably won’t make too many more range trips after this experience. I’d never given it a lot of thought before now.

Still need a good receiver, guess I better look around again. I think that 1897 will make a pretty cool Trap gun. May even keep an eye out for a pistol grip butt stock. May be better off looking for a shotgun with a Cowboy Action bobbed barrel. We’ll see.
