In addition to the added barrel sight, the 3 extra screws visible on the left side of the action show there was a scope mounted on the gun at one time, too.

I got this in an estate buy a few day ago. I know it's refinished at some point and that kills any collector value. My question is would be the value of such a gun. Serial dates it to 1895 which I understand should be cased receiver and parts. Wood is in nice shape as is the entire gun with the exception of the refinish aspect.

I have a Standard Model 71 that was made in 1942. It features a 98 bolt peep, along with a 22 K rear sight with a 1b elevator. It looks to me that it may of come from the factory as it sits. I know of a few Old Timers that liked a rifle set up with a barrel, and peep sight. They liked the set up for shooting at longer ranges. Stating that the front sight was a bit more sharper. That being said, I prefer not to have a rear sight when I am using a peep! Bert, you do have this rifle in your survey.

All I can say after seeing these pics, id soon be in the woods with it, loaded tube & chamber with preferred tested load, yes a slot blank in where the barrel sight was, and when I'd eventually sit on a log to rest, look down at this beauty in my lap, none the details would bother me a bit! Come on my fine friend, we got deer to hunt. Thats 100% Original and Happy!

I am not of the opinion that Winchester would have installed both a bolt peep sight and a barrel mounted sporting sight as the two sights interfere with one another's sighting plane. I suspect that the barrel mounted (dovetail) sights were added by a former owner/dealer.

I like you're statement and question!

I'm in agreement with Bert on this, as it seems table holders/dealers seem to take the inexpensive route to enhance a rifle, and mount the extra sight or sights on them. We've seen this too many times, not to wonder.

Where would one find how many Rifles/Carbines WRA made in 35 Caliber. The 1895 and Hotchkis were 2 models, understand there were others. Bill

I have found a dealer that has new Winchester M1892 Short Rifle in both .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum. And M1886 Short Rifle in 45-70

I might go there to have a look. But I need to check out the calibers, since we also have restrictions in bullet weight and impact energy at 100 meters.

This is what we call Class 1 game:

Moose, bear, red deer, mouflon sheep, musk ox, wisent & wild boar, and there you have 3 different requirements:

Minimum 139gr and 2700J or 155gr and 2000J or if the bullet is a lead free copper bullet, 119gr and 2000J

Class 2 game is roe deer, lynx, wolverine, beaver and seal.

The minimum requirement is 50gr and 800J

I know that 45-70 fulfill the class 1 requirements, but I am not sure of the other.

The 25-35 sounds like a cool cartridge, but I am not sure if it is available over here. And how it would be classified according to type of game. Both guns look good. You can clearly see that the 25-35 has been used a lot, and that is what it is made for.

New barrel, tung oil refreshed finish and suspect serial number...beginning to look like a clone. Too much variation in condition for one rifle. I'd like to see that butt stock naked, something not right. New wood properly fitted would have been a good idea.

In addition to having gone through a recent mediocre restoration, retaining 0% original finish and having a new barrel installed, the serial number appears to have been hand stamped with an incorrect font and poor spacing. The 0, 2 and especially the 7 are quite a lot different. Winchester serial numbers from this timeframe were typically much more evenly spaced and aligned. Here's an example of a serial number from an 1886 from the same timeframe in my collection for comparison:

It certainly raises the question of whether or not this was the original serial number applied to this tang. Mark

Makes me suspect the rifle was created to match the letter.
