A pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Standard or Featherweight style that will consistently shoot into less than 2 MOA is all one should reasonably expect, although with extensive load development and [in the case of the Standard rifle] varying barrel tension with the provided screw may yield somewhat tighter groups. Some people have found floating the barrel reduces group size. I think a consistent 1 MOA rifle is rare.

The 1964 Model 70, for all its cosmetic faults, is provably more accurate out of the box. The barrel is floated and the action is stiffer.

The pre-64 and later versions of the Model 70 are more than accurate enough as hunting rifles in any reasonable circumstances. They are capable out of the box of far more inherent accuracy than nine out of ten hunters are capable of reaching, much less exceeding. A 2 minute rifle will easily stay within an 8 inch circle at 400 yards. Four hundred yards is just one hell of a long way to be shooting at a live, unwounded game animal.

Hi MarkGK-

That is a 220 Swift Standard (not Varmint) rifle. Standard contour, not Medium Heavy, barrel. Hence the forearm screw is factory. The 220 Swift was added to the Varmint rifle in 1959, but it was available in the Standard rifle throughout this time.

The SG swivels are probably added aftermarket... There are ways of determining this, but they require seeing the barrel channel with the action removed and/or the butt stock swivel base be removed...

Best,

Lou

Sooo, is this factory or non factory ? I also understand there should be no forearm screw but this does have it. I can see someone switching stocks but the standard stock being inlet for the super grade swivels has me puzzled. Any help ???

Seems like a unique configuration. I will eventually get it lettered but I feel most confident that it is all original. I've included more pics.

Ok. I wasn't sure what the cutoff date was. I have a 92 Rifle in 38WCF that came back as unknown configuration but the serial number was recorded 1906 I think.

I spent an awful amount of time and effort trying to get a 1950's 270 to shoot like a target rifle. I ended up with a 1 MOA hunter. I did not try bedding the action. Take a bore scope and look at the rifling. If it is free of cross cuts created during the rifling process and has nice strait rifling it may shoot better but these barrels were not made to be target barrels. If this period of rifle has the 3 screws attaching the action and barrel to the stock some tweaking of the screw in the forend can make some difference.

I am more of a pre-64 M70 collector than I am a M70 shooter (regardless of DOM). That's not to say that I don't shoot or that my usual "on the farm" deer rifle isn't a 30-06 pre-64 M70. Just that I haven't experimented with stock inletting and effect on the accuracy of a post-63 M70 in 270 WIN.

So I read your post but haven't anything useful to add, except that I'd probably try to find out what the gun can do as-is before modifying it for better or ill...

At least one forum member and skilled reloader HAS messed with the 270 WIN in the M70 in the last year. His thread should be on here somewhere...

Otherwise, I'll await more informed contributions...

I agree with this assessment. At first, it appeared to be a pistol grip with checkering, but the subtle differences…. Do you think it was a plain pistol grip rifle and checkering happened later? I imagine it’s just beyond the range in which factory letters are available?
