Hello friends. Stumbled across something unusual recently and wanted some input and possibly a source for a replacement butt pad.
25-20wcf
First one I ever seen in this configuration. Seems to be non-bubba. Any opinions?
Thanks!

What style of butt plate is currently on the rifle? The fluted comb style of butt stock starts showing up on Model 1892 rifles with serialization dates starting in 1912. To date, I have cataloged 96 individual Model 1892 rifles with this style of butt stock. Of those 96 rifles 26 are sporting rifles, 43 are carbines with no sling ring, and 27 are SRC's. The most unique feature among all samples is the style of magazines lengths. For all configurations, full length magazines account for 24%, 21% are half mags, while the most common magazines length is 2/3 rds at 53%. Only two carbine examples have a 3/4 magazine. The caliber distribution for all examples is as follows: 24% in 25-20 WCF, 22% are 32 WCF, 42% are 38 WCF, and only 11% are 44 WCF caliber.

Thanks for that information Twobit!

How many of the 96 1892s in your catalog with that style of butt stock are SRC with 2/3 mag chambered in 25-20WCF?

It is a hard rubber butt plate without Widows peak. Im thinking early 20s. Stock has excellent fit. It is a SRC but it is missing the ring. It is chambered in 25-20WCF.
Seems like a unique configuration. I will eventually get it lettered but I feel most confident that it is all original.

Recently I picked up a 1970 M70 in the .270 Winchester.. YAY ! Wanted one for quite a while.

Anyway. Years ago I picked up a 1973 M70 Deluxe .30-06 and bedded it with handloads that shoots really well, as I was getting to tweeking it a little more for even better accuracy, I found the .270.

Don't know if I need to bed it since I advanced in my handloading skills. But the question is, that I read recently, the barrel channel is cut enough to relieve different barrel contours, would bluing rubbing off just beneath where the stock meets the barrel effect accuracy enough to be concerned? After removing the action, any barrel channel wear wasn't visible enough to say it would be any issue but might effect harmonics. Guess I'll load up some test rounds and give it a whirl first before I do anything to it.

Pat,

At this time, there is No possible way to predict what the full impact of that ruling will be. However, the ruling does appear to make it a strong possibility that getting a BATF clearance letter for a SBR or SBS will become a thing of the past. For now, I strongly advise keeping any BATF clearance letters you have, and definitely hold off on sending any new requests to the BATF.
