Sounds logical. I've had a nice 1894 that didn't letter with a PG but the 1886 has the serial number on the lower tang so it makes the Frankenchester theory a bit of a stretch. Certainly presents as an honest gun, very nice wood and desirable configuration.

OK. Time for the rest of the story. I purchased this rifle before obtaining a Cody Letter. Everything is correct and original on this rifle. A couple of members noted the obvious flaws to the rifle but still a hard gun to get in this condition and caliber. I prized the gun as highly collectible.  Cody letter is picked up at the Cody show and I'm dumfounded to see that it does not letter. Letter follows. There is no way that this letter is for this gun even though the serial number matches. This has a PG tang as opposed to a straight tang for the most obvious. The gun is correct but the letter is not. So now what does this mismatch letter do to value of gun? It goes to show how much we count on the Cody Letters. Jessica even checked lines above and below and also similar numbers no ELW matches. Have others had such blatant errors in a Cody letter? Bought from respectable seller and no hard feelings to him or Jessica at Cody but a frustrating situation.

Also I don't see a screw on the bottom of the mag tube holding the plug in but the picture is no the right angle for seeing it.

Selling 2 parts just requires the action taken out of the stock. Saves the buyer of each the $18 addition USPS charges for over 30" packages. I have unfortunately had a couple of rifles damaged in shipping. Shorter packages have less chance of damage. I don't know what a 99%+ complete barreled action with Buehler mount and rings, unattached included, or an all original stock with a little wear would sell for individually. Or their demand.

When it became time for me to sell several pieces of my collection. I broke down and ordered a group of six of the Cameron custom rifle box kits that include 3 layers of cross-linked foam - the stuff they make marine docking fenders from. You cut out the gun's outline from the middle layer with a hot knife. Wrap the gun in the provided anti-rust sheet, make a sandwich of the three foam layers and it's a close fit into the heavy duty cardboard box. My last cost for a kit, including the stiff UPS charge divided by six to get them to me from Lima, Ohio, was about $48 USD. And USPS will assess an overlength fee. BUT, if you explain it in advance, put in the additional terms, and explain what they are getting for the money -- I have never had shipping damage or had a buyer complain.  I've seen the outer box breached but never the foam sandwich. It is extremely resistant to a penetrating strike.

I do wonder whether there were Model 94 carbines serialized n the low 2.7m range that were assembled with machined rather than sintered metal receivers. Your receiver doesn't appear to have been black chromed - I don't think it's late enough -- but neither does it exhibit the flaking and mottling of Dulite on sintered steel.  
My understanding of the sintered metal process is it is fully capable of making very precise parts but (1) the initial equipment. investment is huge; (2) the cost of creating a die is great, to the point you need to be making.enormous quantities of a part to justify the cost of the die; (3) the assembly technique of fitting sintered parts is different. You have a bin of the same part before you. You take one and try it. If it is oversized or undersized, you don't fettle it but put it back and try another until one fits. This can be done much faster and by less experienced people than by a skilled fitter with stones and abrasive papers. With excellent results, with practice.
But there is a learning curve. It strikes me that quality of production in 1964 was more likely variable rather than consistently bad. 
I have a late production Colt Trooper Mark III that is absolutely a credit to its maker. The lockwork is sintered and was assembled as above. I have also a 1955 Colt Three Fifty Seven, the Mark III's antecedent made the traditional way. The trigger stroke is different between the two - the later gun has coil springs and doesn't stack -- but both are of very high quality. I have owned earlier Mark III revolvers that were crude by comparison. 
So, like Schrodinger's cat, perhaps the early post 63 Model 94 can exhibit more than one state, inside its box.
  

I don't know if it will help but I just snapped two more photos of the receiver.  I find that the wear is even and pleasant.

I would say the barrel was bobbed from the big chamfer in the ID and the saw marks. The dovetail for the mag tube band is not factory. Wrench marks on the breech flats.

This gun was aggressively cleaned by someone - even to the point they might have used a power tool - marks all over gun
