Hello all and god morning! I am new here on WACA but I’m an old guy (70) and has been an avid duck hunter since I was 14. Not so much now, however. So since I curtailed my hunting activities I moved to collecting fine examples of duck and goose decoys and although I have 4 Remington shotguns staying with my original 870 WM my father bought me I got the Winchester bug some 6 years ago visiting a friend of my son’s whose father passed awsy and left him a Ranger 30/30. Since then I’ve collected a 1907 1894 and a beautifully Japanese engraved 30/30 carbine originally owned by a navel officer station in Japan during the 50’s. I believe he was stationed there due to the Korean Conflict. Anyway since then I collected a NOS Cowboy and Buffalo Bill, I then started looking at m-12’s and have a 54 Trap, a 56 Pigean, an 20 gauge nicely engraved ( not factory, again like Japanese engraving which is really nice anyway, and a 39 Heavy Duck. I have collected several Winchester books and publications but have found just as much if not more insight here as a guest reader so I decided to join up.Hope my diatribe isn’t too long but wanted to introduce myself anyway as a formality. Looking forward to reading more and gaining more insight . You can really teach an old dog new tricks if that dog wants to listen and learn! Larry.

Late to the party here, but I wanted to chime in. According to Madl and Hawk they have just over 3100 half rounds listed. I have seen approximately a dozen matt barreled 86's and own exactly one. I will say that of the ones I have seen, both in person and for sale on various "forums" 2 were full octagon, 1 was round and the rest half round. I know this means nothing but, given that it seems as if people buying matt barrels liked the half round better. I won't disagree with them! Here is a picture of my 45-90 barrel. I don't have any good pictures but it is a deluxe TD.

With that sight package and shiny relined bore I think you may have a fun gun to shoot silly wet matches with. You may be right about the price as it has little appeal as a collector piece. I'm thinking it's a pretty good shooter, or at least one previous custodian thought so.

You're right about the mag tube being a probable replacement and the receiver sight is not factory. The barrel has also been relined.

Relined, eh? I thought it looked too nice for such an old black powder gun. 🙂 The rifling is sharp and shiny.

Definitely relined. Look closely at the muzzle face and you can see the ring. Further, the very deep chamfer at the bore entrance is not typical Winchester work. The sharp and bright rifling is also a clue... 138-year old black powder rifles in used condition almost never have a bore in that condition.

I suspect that the butt stock is also a replacement. More than likely that rifle will letter with a standard crescent rifle butt.
