The search information you found is incorrect.  Model 1892 s/n 550240 was manufactured in July 1910.

Mate I'm 41! Most of my collecting friends here in Aus have white hair...or no hair...I don't have greys yet

1. 30 consecutive shot target must be sent to me for scoring, I will PM my address when the time comes.

2. Any arm chambered for the 44-40 cartridge

3. 100 to 110 yards

4. standing, sitting whatever floats your boat.

5. open, peep, tang, ladder, scope....whatever works for you to see the target.

6. must list load-out, powder, bullet etc.

7. I will score the target with Ballistic-X phone app.

8. If your target qualifies, I will send it back with a life size target patch (it better be)!

9. more rules as needed...you guys crack me up with the things you do!

I own two, both made in 1980, the last before USRAC took over in New Haven. Both have the push feed 1964 action and are beautifully made. 

In particular, the 1964 Varmint rifle was, at the time, the most accurate centerfire production rifle ever made by Winchster. There were specially tuned custom target rifles that could beat it, but nothing out of the box in regular production could.

I'm assuming you bought a Model 70 with the new push-feed action first offered in 1964 and not a controlled feed pre-64 varmint model sold out of remaining inventory in 1964. 
The Standard style post-63 Model 70 featured a heavier contour barrel than previously, which was sold with a set of (removable) Williams iron sights. It was available in 243 and some confuse it for a varmint model.
However, there was also a dedicated 1964 Varmint model offered, which had a much heavier contour barrel without sights but with installed scope blocks. It was initially offered in 243 and 220 Swift but fairly quickly the Swift was withdrawn and the new 225 Winchester substituted. 
If you can post pictures, it would be helpful If you would do so.  
I'm attaching a photo of a Standard style 1964 rifle (actually, the 1966 version that has a slightly different stock) that is chambered for the 243 cartridge. It is still in the family and I took a Whitetailed buck with it several years ago.

It is a push feed with Heavy Varmint style barrel but has open sight filler screws.  Looks just like the picture posted but has the heavy barrel. Came with a old Weaver T-10 scope probably paid too much $850.00 but what the heck I like it.  Also, the trigger is surprisingly crisp.

At 66, I am a "tweener"... not old enough to be a bona fide "Old Phart", but too old to be a "youngster".  The good news is that I am still in the "collect" frame of mind versus the "dispose" mode.

That is not a great price, as BRP stated, there were a lot of 1917 rifles that were sporterized.  You can check Gunbroker and there are a least 2-3 listed on there everyday, usually for less $$.  Since they have been modified they do not retain any collector value and are simply shooting rifles.

Thanks for your input , I decided against it anyway where it's out of state from a Bass Pro shop and not knowing for sure what it's chambered in and oh yeah , I don't think I have room in my safe for it .....now that you say that about the price , that helps me decide for certain that I'm not buying it !!!

As long as the floor plate latch (button in the trigger guard) snaps fully outward over the notch in the floor plate then everything is as it should be (no evidence the floor plate is a replacement).  The fit is sometimes relatively precise.

A common issue that the assemblers faced was that the depth of stock inletting varies slightly, such that when the action screws were tightened the floor plate wouldn't latch.  There were a couple of "fixes"...  One was special a sheet metal shim put under the latch plate (used when the latch plate inletting was a little too deep to let the plate close).  The other was to adjust the depth of the notch in the floor plate.  This notch was cut with a 1/4" diameter round file, so it could be made deeper if needed to let the latch fully snap into place.  

As for the spring being stiff...  It's a pretty stiff little spring, I have the dimensions around here somewhere... And it might be gunked up... If you remove the trigger guard assembly you can drift out the pin that retains the spring and latch.  The pin is not tapered or usually very tight, it's held in place by the stock wood (can't drift side-to-side).  So you can easily knock it out and clean everything.  That might (???) help...
