S/N 3 was in the Winchester Museum collection, and then later sold by RIA in their December 2019 Premier auction.  I do not remember what the stocks looked like.

I personally handled S/N 4 at the Big Reno show in November 2011.  The stocks had been refinished and the checkering recut.

S/N 7 was listed on Gunbroker in late April 2022.  It had been restocked, aftermarket engraved, and it had a newer barrel.

However, the situation you’re in now.  Should you make things better by cleaning up the guns you don’t own yet.  The family will benefit from your work and you will be trying to buy your work back at auction or whatever.  

It’s not an easy thing to do but I’d advise having a good honest conversation about life and death with this man, that obviously treats you like a son.  

You think it’ll all work out until a lawyer calls you about property of the estate.  

Just random advice from someone you don’t know on the interwebs.  Take it for what it’s worth.

I'm assuming you bought a Model 70 with the new push-feed action first offered in 1964 and not a controlled feed pre-64 varmint model sold out of remaining inventory in 1964. 

The Standard style post-63 Model 70 featured a heavier contour barrel than previously, which was sold with a set of (removable) Williams iron sights. It was available in 243 and some confuse it for a varmint model.

However, there was also a dedicated 1964 Varmint model offered, which had a much heavier contour barrel without sights but with installed scope blocks. It was initially offered in 243 and 220 Swift but fairly quickly the Swift was withdrawn and the new 225 Winchester substituted. 

If you can post pictures, it would be helpful If you would do so.  

I'm attaching a photo of a Standard style 1964 rifle (actually, the 1966 version that has a slightly different stock) that is chambered for the 243 cartridge. It is still in the family and I took a Whitetailed buck with it several years ago.

Doc's Rifles
The exact whereabouts of the rifle are unknown to me although #644 is believed to be out and about at gun shows. The descriptions of each are as follows;

Rifle #644

• blued 26" octagon barrel
• brass front blade
• blued iron frame
• sling ring below butt stock
• cleaning rods in butt stock
• butt plate and maybe lever, nickel plated
• series of grooves on wrist of stock, paint? on left of stock, abrasions nicks and scratches on stock pieces, vertical scratches on both side plates
• finish and nickel plating worn.

Rifle #19,243

• part round part octagon barrel w/hooded front sight and tang peep
• frame, lever, forearm cap, butt plate, color case hardened
• loading gate and barrel blued
• engraved foliated scrolls on muzzle and breech
• left frame engraved, Presented to Dr. E.H. Pardee by the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. New Haven, Conn. 1876 "One Of One Thousand"
• cleaning rod in stock
• dents and slight scratching on forearm, rust on hammer, traces of rust...well used, rifling very worn

#644 should be the rifle used to shoot the 30 consecutive hits target published in 1873'.

#19,243 should be 1 of 1 thousand and maybe what was kept in the wood gun case below since it is addressed from Winchester.

However, I have decided to add this club to the 44-40 website here. This is an exclusive club for those that can provide to me a target that consist of a minimum of 30 consecutive shots (inside 4") with the 44-40 cartridge, fired from between 100 to 110 yards. Can be open, ladder, peep scope, etc. Can also be smokeless or black powder loads. The point is to prove the cartridge, not the shooter's eyesight...and to get some more participation!

I am also looking into getting some 5" patches made....but so far it is a min 100 patches for about $200 That patch would be Doc's target...colors and design yet to be determined.

I’ve emailed Jesi to see if this will letter. Is there any chance that the wood was special ordered, or was it just luck of the draw?  Have you seen other examples with similar wood?

No letter is available, and the wood was not special ordered.  Winchester had a habit of putting slightly better than average wood on the very early new model production rifles.

Just bought a Model 70 1964 s/n 718366 in 243.  It has a heavy varmint barrel.  Would this be considered a "Standard model 70"  rifle is in good shape any info is greatly appreciated.
