My mistake I think.  I had the rifle "listed" as being in Australia but as you can tell from my spreadsheet there is not information regarding the caliber stamp, proof marks, barrel address, upper tang or sights.  Nor did I have WACA or your name associated with it.  Years ago an AU collectors sent me some images of old AU auction listings so I assumed that was where I had gotten the info.

unfortunatly, Chris i traded for a delux 73 , quite a few yrs ago to a friend, (stupid me ) and he still has it, but it has never been on the net, thats why im curious as to where Michael had seen it from an auction sight. I bought it in 1979 for $300, off a friend in sydney who owned it for yrs. I can trace the history back over 50yrs. so if it was in an auction it would of been in the 60s.

Ain't no telling were that rifle is. It won't show up until one day when it finally does and that is if it ever does.

Such things (factory checkered Marksman stocks) do exist, and in rare cases can be documented as factory work.  I know of one that belongs to a Member of this Forum (not mine) that has perfect provenance.

The factory pattern was somewhat specific, although I think (???) that whether the grip checkering went over the top of the wrist (Super Grade style) was variable.  This (below) is a gun I bought...  It's got the factory pattern (matching known ones), but whether it was done by the factory or not is a mystery...

I did happen to have it listed already from an old auction catalog.  Sounds like a nice rifle for sure.  Winchester was making a lot of T/D's in that SN range.

I was privy to the extensive gun collection that Ken Waters had. (He was a noted magazine writer for Wolf Publications.)

In his “stash” was a M70 Target (don’t remember the caliber) but, it had a Marksman stock that, according to Ken, was Factory Checkered!

I actually got to HOLD IT IN MY HANDS!

I echo Tony's comments completely.  Model 1892's are a model I have had quite a bit of familiarity with.  But even more now!  It is satisfying to progressively be able to, "make sense" of the various variations and changes Winchester made over the years.  Bert and Michael stand out as Winchester gurus who have enhanced my knowledge over what totals many years now.

Yes, they are both push feed actioned - like the Remington 700 and the Weatherby Mark V. But beautifully made. 

The floor employees in New Haven still knew how to build fine guns when they were let. It's a shame to tar them with the 1964 brush, which really wasn't their fault.

IF you can post images and the SN of the rifle I will be happy to take a look at it.  I have seen just over 22,500 individual Model 1892's in the past 15 years while working on my research survey.  I may have seen that rifle previously.

Quite frankly, that is one Post-63 I'd be interested in. IIRC it is a well thought-out package. Only thing that kept me from buying one back in the day was a T/C Contender with a 14" barrel that out-shoots most .223 bolt guns. Good luck, Bob.
