Bought it yesterday and started refinishing the wood I don’t mind the patina/ character look to it Just got it finished and cleaned up good and thought I would post it again with a new picture only have one because its dark out and I just got it put back together.
  

I have a thread where I cleaned up 92 stocks.  Check that out.  Everyone with experience chimes in.  The Winchester Wizards walked me through the process. You need to take it apart and take some good pictures of all the markings.   My rifle was a carbine , looks like you have a rifle. Need a barrel measurement. These guys will tell you if it’s been cut.  Price really only matters to you.  Obviously you bought it.  Clean that old girl up correctly and you will have a nice riffle.

The barrel is 24” long  and I assume you mean the markings on the bottom of the barrel is there anymore I need to look for?  This is my first octagon barreled gun it doesn’t seem to have the normal markings on it like my round barreled ones do but I haven’t been collecting Winchesters long and don’t know anything  about that kind of stuff yet. and mostly like my guns for the historical aspect and to be able to shoot them more than them being perfect I have a few guns like that and I am too scared to use them in fear of scratching them up.

My grand father told me that if you don't have anything nice to say then shut your mouth. But I would HIGHLY suggest that you consult some of our more esteemed and knowledgeable collectors before you buy in the future.    
  

I kinda like this 1892. A possible shooter with a truckload of character. Only problem is there isn't much demand for a rifle like this one. I really like the cartridge as well, I would have been hard pressed to walk away from it but it's best to focus on guns with more condition, less character.

Some folks I know who enjoy rustic decor would like to have your rifle for a wall-hanger. I hope you can get it shooting, your gunsmith's report is not very encouraging.

It is my opinion that you paid top dollar for it.  It is purely a "shooter" grade rifle that has seen a hard life.

That's always the other reason I like to post some of this stuff, as to help out in the survey. I agree as it does look to be cut down.
