BRP has just described one of the happiest aspects of the Super 30 - its long, asparagus-like shape. When pukka Sahib has flesh wounded a 600 pound Bengal Tiger just enough to get its undivided murderous attention, hanging up the next round's 25 degree shoulder - a feature of the 300 Winchester and other contemporary magnum cartridges -- on the chamber face of his magazine rifle, from the adrenaline fueled violence of his bolt work, would be......ungood.

At best, Sahib's bush shorts would never be the same. At worst, what's left of him would go home in a small rubber bag.

I don't think Holland's reason for shaping the case was anything other than enabling the long strands of Cordite to be loaded on a production line. But, if I were going Bengal Tiger stalking on foot in a jungle, I think a Super 30 or its big brother 375 Belted Magnum Rimless would be comforting. If I couldn't have a Colt Monitor....

Blue Ridge Parson, May I add that the most accurate Model 70s that I have shot have been .300 H&H Magnums!

I prefer the 300 H&H to all the other magnums. It's accurate, powerful, and doesn't produce unmanageable levels of recoil. Yet another plus to this cartridge is that its tapered shape feeds into the chamber just as slick as goose grease. Never had a 300 H&H that had the feeding problems that the other magnums sometimes give. I would walk past ten 300 Win Mags to get to a 300 H&H. Maybe that's why I have half a dozen of them...

Thanks, I was hoping it was tied to a serial number, and that serial number was letterable with an R&R.

just because the model 70 you’re looking at was made in 1955, doesn’t mean it wasn’t rechambered to 300 Winchester magnum sometime after 1963.

I tend to be that guy too.

If Winchester had replaced the bolt during an R&R it could be marked in that fashion also.

I'm adding this to a old topic since it fits with it and new reader can catch up. I was going through old parts looking for inspector marks and found this proofed 22 caliber bolt from a 73. It has the WP proof as well as the oval P mail order mark and on the opposite side it has the triangle with 1 in it and a O. The triangle I have seen on the bottom of barrels which would of been a inspectors mark. Up to now I have only seen the French "L" at least that is what I was told it was or a Star stamped on a 73 bolt. It would reinforce the theory that Winchester would test the part and stamp it as being tested then send it out. It looks like they proofed the critical parts before sending them out the door. Other parts that would not affect the guns ability to contain the powder charge would not need to be tested besides the normal inspections. This was done later in production after the proof marking started and the earlier production parts were probably tested but they never marked them.

If the mystery rifle in question were rechambered to 300 Win, barrel length would disclose the fact. Barrel is pulled, one or more threads are faced off and recut to allow the Win reamers to clean up the Holland chamber, headspace re-established and new extractor groove cut. The barrel length from muzzle to bolt face is no longer going to be a full 25 (or was it 26) inches. But we all agree it would still need a chamber cast.

The search information you found is incorrect. Model 1892 s/n 550240 was manufactured in July 1910.
