The 270 has been to Montana hunting Mulies, It has also taken a blacktail below the house.

 As for the two new 375s one of them will go to elk camp this year although it might stay in camp on the rainiest days.

 I can also see an opportunity for one of the 375s on my next trip to the dark continant.

Note the "pimp" gun in the below pictures. That is a 95 IN 405  that was restored by my local smith. 

 So you cant say that i am afraid to take them to the field.

It's well known that I'm another "informed" consumer that appreciates said "pimp guns"!  And seeing that Zeb is in the same crowd, gives me even greater boldness to stand up to the bearded offender!   
  

It is only "dilapidated" because I use it for its intended purpose... drive the daylights out of it!  Those "Pimp" rifles are most likely never going to see a single day at the range or in the field doing what they were designed for.  I want to see one of them leaned up against a harvested deer or elk

This is the stuff we agreed I shouldn’t really be looking at, the stuff that those who really want it can’t afford it, and those who can afford it won’t want it—they will want more condition, perhaps a factory letterable rifle, and possibly a more desirable calibre.  

I bid it to $2300 which was at the higher end of the pre auction estimate, FWIW.

That is a darn nice looking rifle.   There is MAYBE just the VERY slightest amount of bluing wear on the top barrel flat that might make you think that there had been a standard rear sight on the gun at one time???  But beyond that it looks like it was carried a few times and then pretty much not touched for the past 102 years!  congrats to whoever got it.  Based on what I have seen a POS rifle sells in the $700 to $900 range so a $2000 premium for a gun that will be hard  to improve on is not bad.

I thought the very same thing, and asked for more photographs.  I attached them to this post.

I think there was a rear sight once.  But an aftermarket applied Lyman 21 sight is about the one thing that doesn’t decrease value from factory original, and likely increases it.  Since no factory letter is available, we can say “who cares?’

Trey,  a lot of these micrometer sights are regularly traded on eBay.  If you can find one on swapmeet it will likely be cheaper but I would keep a weather eye on eBay.

I had to buy my Redfield 80.coded for a Model 86/71 on eBay and had to win a bidding war to get it. As I recall,  it cost me $375 plus shipping and tax and that was at least 15 to 20 years ago. 

I would guess the W code sights are much more common but the eBay market is principally a market for collectors of these sights, which increases buyer competition and price. 

Such a thing is sui generis- so unique it can't be grouped with anything else. Like the Mona Lisa. 

Specimens of Biesen and Goudy based on Winchester rifles and shotguns appeal to two groups, almost all Winchester collectors and experienced sportsmen who admire the best American custom rifle work. 

In my opinion - and I've held several Biesen rifles in my hands but never have been fortunate enough to own one -- Al's specialty was building the finest hunting rifles that were actually made to be used. There is nothing frail or fragile about them nor do they exhibit the effete contours especially executed solely to show off the skill of the maker - something seen too often at shows of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild. I have read some members of that group believe Biesen could not have qualified for membership. The tail has begun to wag the dog.
