I don't think the Lyman 48 is mounted backwards as many of them were mounted on the right side of a receiver.

That doesn't mean I believe Lyman made this sight for the Model 1895 Winchester.

That's a Lyman 48... 1st version w/ external spring. Lyman 48 sights have application markings typically on the back of the sight...this marking verifies what the sight was originally intended to fit. (Note: I don't find a 48 listed for the Winchester 95). There should also matching markings on the back of the slide and inside the channel the slide fits in. A Lyman mounted on the right side of a receiver isn't uncommon. As far as factory, that would be a Cody letter away. When/if you get the rifle in hand, removing the sight is pretty simple. Checking the holes drilled in the receiver can help in authenticity of factory installation... good luck.. Ben

It’s a 1931 “ish” date of manufacture—so a complete letter won’t be available to help or confuse the issues. The 1895 book from Kassab and Dunbar has a lot of great pictures and info but I don’t find anything in it that resembles or would make me believe it is OEM. It’s a nice clean representative sample in an interesting caliber. PH

Ah....protracted negotiations! If anything, the sight is a cool oddity if it's truly a LH version! I'm still interested if someone knows more about it...

It does appear to likely have a replacement hammer screw. Doesnt quite match. Easy enough to fix though.

I see the usual flaking on top of the bolt, but that receiver sure is finish-worn imo....esp in comparison to the still-pretty-nice barrel. 🤷

Agreed here, the receiver finish has no issues. Usually when these go through a fire there will be streaks in the blue or beaded areas in the blue i where blue is missing. This looks like the normal flaking then a period of time where it was used and the receiver started to patina. It really doesnt take long for a receiver to go from flaked silver to patina when in use and not cleaned for periods of time after subject to moisture, sunlight or combination of both. Unfortunately it got the hole drilled in the receiver.

To start this off, the serial number on that rifle (1044913) positively identifies it as a March 1929 production Model 94... not a 1935 production gun.

In viewing the pictures of the rifle, the condition of the receiver frame is original, and it is actually quite typical of the late 1920s bluing issue. I am not seeing anything that would lead me to believe that the receiver frame has been artificially cleaned, or subjected to a fire, or to any harsh chemicals.

What I do see is the extra hole bored in the upper tang, and a non-original (replaced) rear sight.

I agree with Jeremy. Especially looking at the top of the receiver. Reminds me of fire damage.

That's not the "normal" receiver finish flaking you can read about and is common, that looks "Cleaned" to me, maybe even chemically, but yes, the barrels and other parts would wear at different rates...that's one of the hallmarks of an "honest" gun.
