My friend inherited an old 1873 that has "Mathieson Alkali Works, Saltville, Va." engraved on the left side of the receiver. The serial number is 481348B.
I did some digging into this company and it appears this company was owned by Winchester-Olin according to Wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olin_Corporation

http://www.library.hbs.edu/hc/lehman/company.html?company=olin_mathieson_chemical_corporation

Any info you guys can help me find regarding this rifle would be greatly appreciated. I’m working with him to get more and better pics. It could be my eyes, but I think I see very very light traces of case color?

First get a letter or call to find out what it left the factory as. You can remove a side plate and if it had case color it should be on the back side of the plates but I don’t see case color on it.

Graded condition isnt great as you can tell, but knowing what we now know about the engraving and the company engraved, what would you guys speculate about the value? I may make him an offer.

Edit to add: its sort of ironic that this rifle was made in 1894 and engraved with the name of a company that ultimately was merged with Winchesters parent company exactly 60 years later.

Hey guys just wanted to circle back on this. Would the engraving as lettered add any significant value to this rifle?

Thanks

I would think it would add some value but with regards to a firearm that lacks condition, additional value added would be negligible.

More pictures are in order to see the rest of the gun to come up with a value.

In my opinion, $900 was a very good price. I have not seen a well-used, but honest ’73 for that cheap around here in many years.
