Hi farmerrick-

The pre-64 M70 300 H&H Magnum had a 26-inch barrel and no recoil pad. They also did not have a counterbored crown. What I suspect is that this was a standard 300 H&H Magnum barrel (it does appear to be a Winchester barrel based on what I can see of the roll marks), that was turned down to remove the barrel boss and shortened by 2-inches. Removing the rear sight boss does not require you to turn the barrel down so much as to remove the roll markings provided that you follow the regular taper of the barrel.

They don't show me the right pictures. I'd want to see the stock from the top to see if there was inletting for a rear sight boss that was filled in, and figure out whether the hole under the fore arm contains a functional barrel bedding screw. It shouldn't, b/c removing the barrel boss also removes the dovetail for the bedding screw escutcheon underneath. The presence of the hole says it's a standard stock, not a Featherweight stock with the barrel channel opened to sporter contour.

I believe that Winchester did (rarely) make standard weight barrels without the rear sight boss on special order and that they did make stocks for them. But I don't think this is one of them. The usual "sight delete" option (cataloged extra cost option beginning in 1960) involved omitting the top and bottom dovetails, but keeping the barrel boss. This one, a 300 Winchester Magnum, is more of a typical "sightless" standard rifle.

The nice thing about buying from ebay, is I just push a buy button, they take money from my paypal, and I get the item in a couple of days. Simple. The seller mailed them the same day I bought them. If the item lost in the mail, wrong item sent, or defective, I get my money returned from ebay including postage. A very simple guaranteed way to buy something.

Hi wolfbait-

IF the goal is simply to put plugs in the factory scope base holes, then it does not matter which type you choose. ANY 6-48 plug screw will work.

IF the goal is to replace the plug screws with ones that look like the ones the factory installed, then you'd need ones like I pictured above. I took those out of a M70 receiver to take pictures.

Most of the aftermarket plug screws for sale these days are either flat on top (such that they can sit flush with the receiver surface) OR are they made with the "STOP" or "cap" (such that they protrude slightly, but cannot be turned in too far). Of the two commonly available styles, the ones with the stop look more like the factory plug screws when installed than the ones that are flat on top and sit flush. The ones you posted a link to are the ones with the stop. They will work fine and look like factory plugs (unless someone removes them for "examination")....

The screws that were used to hold the mount onto the receiver can not be used to fill the holes when the mount is removed. The furthest forward hole is finger lever pin stop screw. The finger lever pin stop screw is different between the pre and post 64. If your rifle was made before 1964 you want (wp71d). Post 64 production is part number (C100A). This screw holds the pin in place that connects your finger lever to the bolt. The 2 back holes are filled with plug screws (same for pre and post 64). You have a choice between just a straight plug screw (wp46), or a positive stop plug screw (there is a tiny lip on the Forearm so the screw stops flush with recviever) (wp540a) if you would like the stainless plug screws please order separatly part number wp540b) USE THE DROP DOWN LIST BELOW TO CHOOSE SCREW YOUR SCREW COMBINATION.

Unfortunately, No they do not. The factory ledger records for the Model 1892 end at serial number 379999 (April 4th, 1907). Per the Polishing Room records, the year 1909 began with serial number 471653. While some earlier production serial numbers (pre 379999) may have been received in the warehouse in 1909, they are not 1909 guns.

Serial numbers 380000+ cannot be lettered.

Brandin, may I make a suggestion? It is one I believe Bert will agree with:

This man's group of 1895s is not a good place to start and Gunbroker is not a good place to look for Winchesters with condition at a decent price.

If possible, hold off until you can attend at least a couple of the large gun shows where collectible Winchesters will be well represented. Ideally, it would be one of the WACA shows - and the one in Cody, Wyoming is coming up very soon.

Another, not a WACA show only, is the big show in Oklahoma City. It's huge.

If not those, the collector shows in your home state.

You can lay hands on a lot of guns and begin to get a grip on how much condition you can afford. As an investment, it is far better to have one collectible quality rifle than 4 shooters, although there's nothing wrong with the latter if priced to reflect its lack of condition.

What you want to avoid is paying the price of a collectible for a shooter grade piece.

May I suggest you quit messing with eBay and become familiar with Brownells? You will eventually need them and you can call them on the phone and discuss exactly what you want. They are the premier supplier to the gunsmithing trade. Use eBay when you are more familiar with what you need.
