It's the belly crawl to get within 70 yards of that monster that deserves recognition. I don't know there's enough good Scotch whiskey in Africa to make me think that would be a good idea. Climbing a tree would be more appealing. 

But he's a hell of a trophy, even if you probably had to tear out a door frame to get the head on your wall.

1975 - 1980 were good years for the Model 94.

There is a story.....I had 5 days to hunt buffalo. The goal was to get within 50 yards for a clean shot with the 405.

300 grain Woodleigh 58.5 g 4895 2250 FPS. 

We had a couple of opportunities at 75 to 100 yards but i passed, day 5 we decided that if we couldnt get within my wanted range we would use a 375. Morning of we found the herd and belly crawled to 70 yards. 375 in the boiler room! He was pissed and looking for whatever hit him (me). Follow up with another 375 and he was going down.

We gave him a minute and he was not going to get up, i paid the insurance with the 405 and we were done.

Not quite as cool as a 405 only kill but still..

 Defiantly an awesome experience that i will chase again.

 The day before i got him there was a hunter killed by a buff less than 50 miles from me. I did not know it at the time.

You might try Ben Tolson if you haven't already. 

In general, because this is a collectors' organization, I have the feeling most tend to associate Redfield micrometer aperture sights with the later Winchester lever actions and Lyman micrometer sights with Winchester bolt actions. I can't prove it.  

If you can't find a suitable Redfield 80, another alternative would be to obtain a "short block" Lyman 48 WJS and have a competent gunsmith fit the block to the wood, removing steel (rather than wood) as necessary to achieve a proper fit without scarring the Walnut or its finish. 

Given that you have no way to install a scope or a barrel mounted open sight without seriously modifying the rifle,  the least injurious way to make the rifle useable is to install a good micrometer aperture sight in the provided factory holes. Without it, you have an expensive paperweight. 

I would myself try to do what you are doing. If unsuccessful I would do the needful with a late production Lyman 48 and have someone with the necessary skill at metal working do the installation. 

I am talking about the quality of materials, mechanical functionality, accuracy, fit and cosmetic finish. Traditionalists will never accept the "angle eject" feature, a  rebounding hammer, and other "anomalies" but the guns are commonly acknowledged to be well made and superior to those of the worst of the post-64 years. 

The thing I want to know is how much of what powder and what bullet -- and how many of them - it took to terminate the Buffalo. 

While we are on the subject. Jack O'Connor carried Biesen rifles all over the World and they carried "field marks" to prove it. I would admire to own any of them and not because they were owned by O'Connor. 

Note to self: put a red recoil pad on the 405.

 The 270 has been to Montana hunting Mulies, It has also taken a blacktail below the house.
 As for the two new 375s one of them will go to elk camp this year although it might stay in camp on the rainiest days.
 I can also see an opportunity for one of the 375s on my next trip to the dark continant.
Note the "pimp" gun in the below pictures. That is a 95 IN 405  that was restored by my local smith. 
 So you cant say that i am afraid to take them to the field.

That is one of the biggest smiles I have ever seen over that Cape buff! And with a 405wcf. must be like what TR was feeling.

Although not a Winchester, there were a few other manufacturers who chambered the .35 WCF.  One, that I've owned, is a Ross rifle in .35 WCF (barrel marked, ".35 Ross).  There were several models of the Ross rifle where there were but two chamberings:  .303 British and .35 WCF.

Again Mike , some of them were just plain "junk" and some were very well manufactured . You couldn't sell Me on a Canadian Centennial as a shooter, but a Crazy Horse or any of the 9422,s are great guns.
  

Interesting.  I really had no idea that some of the commemorative rifles shot better than others.  I've never owned a commemorative of any model.

This is the stuff we agreed I shouldn’t really be looking at, the stuff that those who really want it can’t afford it, and those who can afford it won’t want it—they will want more condition, perhaps a factory letterable rifle, and possibly a more desirable calibre.  
I bid it to $2300 which was at the higher end of the pre auction estimate, FWIW.
  

I'm thinking this gun has too much condition to be considered a, "middle" gun, but there's not hard and fast rules here.  I would say this gun falls in a, "gray" area but it has too much blue for that
