Michael,
I have several model 1892 rifles and carbines that I could probably add to your survey.
The only one that is a little unusual is serial number 497370. Its a solid frame octagon barrel, 25-20 rifle. The somewhat unusual feature that you might want to capture in your survey is the upper tang stamping for which I've attached a picture. According to George Madis in the Winchester Book this tang marking is rarely found, and only on those guns intended for export. If you don't have this rifle in your survey, let me know and I'll send you a complete set of photos.

Good morning Roger,

I have seen that rifle for sale twice. First on Gunbroker out of Oyster Bay NY in Mar of 2024 and then on Guns International in Aug of 2025 by RW Outdoors in MT. I REALLY do not agree with Madis on why the tang is marked as such. Here is my take on these rifles:

I do have to disagree that the tang marking has anything to do with export of rifles to Britain. The tang stamp style on your rifle, with or without the small "MOD 1892" stamped across the tang, is found between SN 476000 and 502000. Roughly 25,000 rifles This corresponds to production from 1909 for the Model 1892. The earlier guns with the style do not have any MOD 1892 added to the tang whereas the later examples in this range do have it. Those early gun are indeed lacking any Model designation on them. The majority of the rifle in this range are sporting rifles in 25-20 WCF caliber. I have catalogued right at 200 rifles with this tang stamp style and not a single one has any foreign proof stamps! I know Madis claims the tang style was used for export guns but the data does not support that claim.

It is interesting to note also that during 1909 this identical tang stamp style was begun to be used on the Model 1890 slide action .22 caliber rifles. Those rifles already had the Model designation being applied to the barrel so there were no Model 1890 rifles produced without model designations. This style was used until 1915 for the Model 1890's. Certainly, Winchester did not intend to export the entirety of 6 years worth of 1890 production.

It is my belief that the use of this tang stamp style on the Model 1892 rifles was a production error. I will be the first to admit that 25,000 rifles with an "error" is a bit hard to believe but the export idea does not make sense either.

I hope all is well. Have you looked at this Model 55 in the LSB Auction:
a 38-55 manufactured in 1940?
Thanks, Kevin

I had my hands on that rifle many years ago when it was in a past WACA members collection. It is one of the two 38-55 rifles that I mentioned and pictured in my first Model 55 article back in the Winter 2012 Collector magazine - Winter 2012 (winchestercollector.org)

I was fascinated to see this 38-55 M55. I've known from Bert's survey there have been two out there in .38-55, but it's fun to see one. I also really like the Lyman No. 21 on it. But what fascinated me the most was the buttstock. It is not fluted. I have a very late production M55 solid frame .32 special (1241xxx) (it's in Bert's survey). Anyway, the buttstock on mine does not have the flutes either. This .38-55 is the only other M55 I've seen without the flutes.

It also has a Type 7 upper tang marking versus a Type 6.

For those who might be wondering, the 25-35 WCF was the least common of the three standard calibers. Thus far, I have only found (123) of them as compared to a total of (1,555) Model 55 rifles. Of the (123), just (29) are the Solid Frame variation, which equates to just 1.9% of the total production. Add to that, the subject rifle is the one & only special ordered Solid Frame rifle in 25-35 WCF.
Bert

That is one special rifle. The pistol grip, checkered, aspect of the rifle really caught my attention too. You don't see that on every M55 that comes along.

Just stumbled on this site while researching my 94 - what a great resource with awesome historical info! Thank you for compiling all of this, I've enjoyed reading all the replies.

I have 1330940, 30 WCF, checkered buttplate. The barrel is stamped 42 and the receiver 40. Near the front, where the mag tube meets receiver, it appears to be stamped with a "D" and an "A" or arrow - it's hard to tell. Bought new by my great-grandfather, it is still chasing blacktails in Lewis County, WA!

I suspect that you have one of the Canadian PCMR Carbines. The marking you are describing is most likely the Canadian Broad Arrow that looks like this;

The serial number identifies it as an April 1942 production Model 94, and it is right in the middle of the known serial numnber range for the 2,500 Winchester carbines purchased by the Canadian government and shipped to British Columbia during WW II.

If you can do so, please send me a picture of the marking on your Carbine
