I was perusing a local online auction, and a miscellaneous accessory lot caught my eye. In the picture I could see various cleaning solvents, some patches, a small box of brushes, and a CCI .22 ammo plastic container with some stuff inside. The label on the CCI box mostly obscured the contents, but blowing up the picture revealed what appeared to be part of a rear leaf site as well as a couple of dovetail front sights.

I figured that since I could always use more sights, I tossed a max bid of $15 on the lot and ended up winning it for $9. With tax and premium, out the door for just over $11.

When I picked it up yesterday, I opened the box to find mostly rear and front sights for black powder guns, a couple of pistol cleaning rods....... and a Winchester Model 08 rod, complete with all three sections, accessory tips, and the canvas case. Looks like I did pretty good for an $11 investment.

While Sutherland was almost typecast to play oddball or evil characters, his acting range was much broader. He was allowed to display this as Calvin Jarrett, the grieving father of Timothy Hutton's traumatized, suicidal character as his younger son, in the 1980 film Ordinary People. It is a highly demanding role requiring the portrayal of quiet stability and emotional heroism, providing a lifeline to his son as he discovers the hidden resentment and bitterness of his wife, who secretly blames her surviving son for the death of her elder son. Mary Tyler Moore is also allowed to show her full range and break out of the lightweight, happy time roles to which she'd been confined. A powerful drama, it was Robert Redford's directorial debut. He won the Best Director Oscar for it. I had forgotten how good it was until you mentioned Sutherland's Oddball.

I think that is a bit extreme but probably similar to what they were made on originally.

No, I was thinking more small scale. These duplicators can be found for less than $1000 and are a fun addition to any wood shop.

If someone can get the dimensions I can throw them into G-code and easily 3D print a pattern for use on a duplicator.

The one in the Richmond auction is an authentic Winchester gun rack. Take a look on page 709 of the Standard Catalog of Winchester. The other one may be an original that has been re furbished? The original has felt in the notches at the top. Believe me, making the bottom piece where the rifle butts sit isn't and easy part to make.

Chuck,

Thanks for that, as I looked on page #709, and like you said it's in there, and the base might be remade, or re worked but that's definitely it!

Learned something else on this great site!

Thanks,

So what you're saying is that all Zeb needs is one of these? This is an old Winchester factory photo.

Salstrom stock duplicating machine c.1950s??? I'm sure he can pick one up CHEAP on eBay...

I would like to have dimensions (of each part) of those racks, just to figure out how to make one... Looks like a fun project for the DIY'er with a wood lathe to go with his/her jig/scroll saw. The wood would be easy... My Brother has a saw mill and we've got lots of white oak logs to quarter saw...

For the bottom piece, I would be inclined to 3D print a pattern and then use a three-dimensional duplicating wood carving machine to crank out a number of them. Easy Peazy.

No kidding.

I'd be inclined to make it in sections with a band saw and router table, making a common pre-drilled hole with a template. Then join the sections on a 1/2" brass rod, plugging the ends with face grain Oak plugs.

You wouldn't get done with it by suppertime.
