BTW, I'm late to this conversation, so wanted to get in my 2 cents about slugging barrels.  I believe it was in Wal-Mart I picked up some pure lead "bullet weights" that are, in fact fishing weights shaped like a truncated cone with a hole down the center that you can push monofilament through if you're using it for fishing weights, but obviously not useful for our application.  They come in small plastic bags hanging with the other fishing weights, so you can get whatever diameter you need to push through the barrel of your rifle.  I used them for slugging the barrel of a bolt-action benchrest rifle I was building, and they worked quite well.  That was .30 caliber, and I don't recall if they had large enough sizes to slug a .45, but they probably do.

I pulled one of the Remington bullets, and it's 200 grain. It looks just like a 35 Rem core-lokt bullet.
So I'm assuming it's a Rem. 200 grain core-lokt bullet they loaded for the 348 Win.
  

Not a surprise... based on what I have observed, the factory 200-grain load was the most popular with the people who shot & hunted with a Model 71.  The 250-grain loads were a bit on the stout side, and only popular with the fellows who routinely hunted in the northern regions of Canada and Alaska.

With the wide spread of possibilities you should be able to weigh the cartridge and determine the bullet weight. OTOH if there's any doubt about them being factory loads pulling at least one is a good idea. If you are looking for factory rounds I believe Winchester made a run recently and they will likely be scarce again before long.

Winchester loaded 150, 200, and 250 grain factory loads. While I do not know for sure, I highly suspect that Remington offered the same.

It's my impression the sights on some of our old Winchesters are designed for shooting much longer distances than many of us are comfortable with. Some of those guys could really shoot and some of our rifles will surprise us if we are able.

I agree.  I try to shoot as much as I can.  Each gun is different.  Needs its own dope.  I’m not good enough yet to outshoot anything I have.

My opinion of correct use if them is pretty much in the eye of the user! My use would start with the sight similar to your right hand Pic, bead in bottom of the U, for up close standard ranges, and 6 O'clock hold. Then thru experimented ranges, the bead in the center, like an aperture-ghist ring sight to determine correct range Bullseye? Then the bead held level with the tips of Horns for longest range Bullseye. At least that'd be my use of them, seems very effective hunting sight for cartridges with trajectory like 45-70 & 45-90, or any similar! Make for lotta fun shooting way out there!
  

That’s what you will find with a basic google search on how to use the sight.  After shooting the modern ammo and extrapolating for trajectory of the 45-70. My sight picture works for 100-150 yds. I don’t plan on shooting past 75 yds when I’m hunting.  I think the top of the buckhorn might put me at 300 to 350 yds.  I happen to have some steel plates at 330. So I’ll find out when I get to shoot again.
