Used the Winchester 1876 ,45/75wcf on a West Tx. wild hog hunt .Ran across two boars and they picked me up about the same time I saw them. They both turned and started for some heavy brush. The black boar kept plenty brush between us ,but his Pard the redish brown one was in the rear. He was quartering away from me prety fast. I give him a barrel from the old 1876 Winchester in 45/75wcf. The 350 gr. soft lead bullet entered just under the spine on his right side and the exit wound on the left side top of shoulder,,,,( was very impressive). Win38-55 ,from what I was told when I purchased this 1876 Win. some yrs back. It had been used hunting in the North woods of Maine for Moose ,Deer and Bear. The story goes ,the original owner had grown old and the rifle had been silent for some 90+ yrs. When the estate sold the rifle I was the lucky one to purchase it.The old 76 Win. has been on many hunts with me since, and is a very sound hunting rifle. For Sport hunting,nothing brings me more pleasure than having along an old Winchester rifle.I hope the rifles next owner uses it for hunting as I do. That is what it was intended for.,,,,,,Dusty Texian

Hello Dusty,
Where in Texas are you living/hunting? I am in Houston and use a few Model 1873, 1892, and 1894 rifles to hunt hogs and coyotes on my ranch a bit to the east of Austin.

I have been to both Llano and Mason many times while fly fishing on the river. At least in past years when there was water flowing in it. It has been about 6 years or so since I have been out there. I used to stay in Castell at a guys house which he rented out. I always thought Mason was a nice little town with just enough "stuff" but not crazy like Fredericksburg!! Is the Llaneaux restaurant still in business?

twobit,my place is just 3 mi. up river from the Castell store, near Willow Creek. The river is running really good . I think the Llaneaux resturant is closed and just does events now. Not sure. Very good Hunting and Fishing on the Llano river. Plan on having all the younguns up for a wk. of fishing and swimming ,now that school has ended.,,,,,Dusty

Howdy 28 guage,wild hog hunting is all yr. deal with me. Will try for Wt. deer and desert Mule deer in the fall. Along with Aoudad ram . The Aoudad , are free range out here and can be hunted yr. long also.,,,,,Dusty Texian.

Have had the 45/60 Winchester 1876 at the range the last couple of trips but today the old 45/75 is going to get the dust knocked off of it. My favorite load for it is a dead soft bullet cast from the original Winchester mold @ .458 /354gr. and lubed with 50/50 wax -tallow. Std. Winchester Lg. rifle primer ,77gr. of 2ff Swiss BP. heavy compression, in a Jamison case all assembled with the original Winchester tong tool. This concoction makes the best ammunition for my 1876 45/75 that I have shot in it. This load is very similar to the original load from Winchester in the past , and gives a feel of what it was like to shoot the M1876 Winchester 45/75 wcf back in the old days. This rifle and load combination has produced very good accuracy and simply stops game in its tracks. I smell a Spring time wild hog hunt coming up. Good Shooting and Hunting ,,,,,,,DT

DT, I know what you mean about that spring time hunting–its here, Im ready, and my 1892 in 38-40 is ready. Got some piglets around my neck of the woods that are about 20-25 pounds right now, they sure make for good eating. Split them down the back and throw them on the pit. I also use that gun to shoot turkey–got a few more weeks before season ends.
If your from the Port Arthur/Winnie area you might know my father-in-law, Joe Broussard. He and his brother Gene have a large rice & crawfish operation there in Nome, TX. If you ever make it up that way to by crawfish from them, let them know I sent you–maybe bring that 76 and show them what it can do at their range.
