True that! This thread inspired me to toss a couple in the car when I went to run my traps today. That ammo isn't getting any younger and neither are we. As you may have noticed by the price tag on one box I haven't bought ammo in awhile. I have less than a thousand rounds of 22WMR but at this rate I'll never need to buy more.

That would last me quite awhile, Bert. That partial box is at least 20 and possibly 30 years old and I've only managed to fire 31 rounds out of it. Those little hideout revolvers are slow to shoot and even slower to reload. Kinda easy on the ammo. Seems your rifle likes it better than anything else you've tried in it, might be worth keeping around.

I will never shoot that many rounds through it. In addition to the Super-X ammo, I have another 700 rounds of CCI, Federal, Hornady, and Remington 22 Magnum ammo. I have two pistols that I can shoot it in (PMR-30 and an original Ruger Single Six convertible). I need to start shooting more of my rim fires...

It's an old 597 Magnum. One of the first 17HMR's. They had problems with it but it shot very well for me and a few guys I know. Too bad it's a 22WMR now, well with Minute of Coyote from here to my back fence, tho.

I stand corrected on the Winchester ammo, Bert! I haven’t tried the later offerings sitting on my shelf and after a quick range trip I was impressed! Shot four very quick five-shot groups and the Winchester Varmint HV (30gr polymer tip V-Max @2250fps) looked good so I went back to the bench for a ten-shot group. Got in a hurry and flubbed a trigger reset and the resulting flyer ruined a nice group. I’m not the shooter Bert is, I signed in at the range office at 4:15, cleared the gate at 4:45 so I didn’t squeeze the last drop of accuracy out of the ugly little R-word pest control appliance. It doesn’t seem to have any marked preference for any of the CCI ammo I pulled off the shelf.

if it”s any consolation the 61M was never intended to be a target rifle and the one you beat Ben out of is certainly a lot easier in the eyes than my polymer and phosphate coyote club. Photos of the R-word are NOT forthcoming! Attached 50 yard target is not bragging material but it certainly shows promise.

Personally I could never figure why any one would want a .22 magnum especially with a .22 hornet or the .22 Win. c.f. available. Any game doable with a .22 mag. was pretty much doable with a .22 l.r. Now saying that I knew fellas that went deer hunting with a .22, because it was the only gun they had. Then on the other end I knew fellas that used a .303 Enfield on jack rabbits,. I had a .22 hornet many years ago that shot many "killer" ground hogs and put many cottontails in the pot, it would still be about My favorite cartridge if I was still hunting, I would just need to find one in a lever action with a "red dot" sight on it so I could hit something.

For carrying & hunting, the Winchester Model 43 is my favorite 22 Hornet rifle. I have mine scoped with a Leupold VX-II 2x7, and with factory Remington 45-gr HP ammo, it shoots sub MOA (dime sized) groups @ 100-yds
