Ok... there's sort of a plan.... I talked to Elliot Archilla today... he used to collect solid frames. He thinks he has the right period parts (sights & hangers) I need to put it back together. Unfortunately, the barrel is for a second model, but it does have a great bore. I doubt I'll ever find a nice first model .22 short barrel out there.

Colorado Collector's Show was really good to me. Here's another find... a Winchester 1906 Expert with Nickel receiver... just like one of the rifles presented to Nan Gable (Aspenwall) by Winchester in 1922. I'm heading out tomorrow to visit my "trap line"... I don't think I'll top what I found last weekend in Colorado... but it will be fun to try. 🙂

Of course there are different stamping versions on the bottom of the plate, so if you want one that corresponds to 1948, you’ll have to poke around. I’d have to check which stamp would be period for that time frame. What is the s/n. But yes, the mags are basically the same if you just want to shoot.

Hello!

I’ve acquired a 1948 Model 75 Target. It is basically a barn find. It must have had a good clean/oil before it was left and most of the metal is ok but some areas worse than others, some pitting, I’ve done some cold blueing in the past so I think it will look great with some work. The wood looks bad but appears will respond well to refurbishment. Inside the receiver and the bolt itself looks great. Drum roll…. The bore looks perfect! And it shoots great, well, great for me, after a couple of dry patches, it put 5 CCI mini-mags into a nickel at 25 yds, I feel like it will do better, looks like the muzzle crown has a problem as it’s just a flat muzzle face, I see a target crown in its future. All parts present and correct but missing the magazine.

Can the forum please suggest some sources for magazines? Is the magazine common to other Models such as the 52, 57, 69 or others?

Any other comments welcome!

Thank you!

As we discussed, Winchester didn't make matched sets, and with only 1000 Eagle Scouts mfg. in 1985, along with the 15,000 Boy Scout rifles mfg. It's not an easy task, matching them up and or finding them, but it was enjoyable and being a former Eagle Scout, I can remember the great times we had and some memories that will last forever in my lifetime!

However Madi’s does mention later on 96 peep sights could be had on special order, but will be rarely seen, so maybe it’s right. But I don’t think that would render the 68 into obsolescence.

I stand corrected.

Copied from Wikipedia..........

The Model 68 was basically a Model 67 with a hooded front sight and an aperture rear sight. The Model 68 was effectively rendered redundant when its special sights became optional on the Model 67 in August 1943, but the rifle was not actually discontinued until 1944, and deliveries from inventory continued into 1945.

Disagree, the 96A peep sight was standard on the Model 68, and was mounted much farther back.

The only options on the 67 were a Lyman 55W reciever sight and a Lyman 57ES receiver sight which required the safety to be altered.

Standard rear sight was a 32B with a 2C elevator.
