There is a mark engraved on the inside of the stock that looks like a V or an A. What does that mean?

Does the matching scope have any distinctive markings so I can recognize it if I ever come across one? They weren't made by Winchester, were they?

Yes, you are certainly correct! The #6 bases were the same height as the #8 (.250) but the hole spacing is different. They would be correct for the early 677. Good catch!

The C Sporting was very late to be put in production and the B Sporting continued to be produced well into the Fifties, as a result. The late ones were furnished with steel grip caps.

The view of the buttplate may be distorted by the camera lens, making the plate appear thicker than in reality. A too-wide angle lens - one of short focal length - can make closer objects appear relatively larger than those in background.

But whether the wood and steel have been refinished is a question hard to answer just by looking at a photograph. I will say the apparent high gloss on the wood is suspicious. The high condition 52 Sporting Rifles I have examined in person have a sprayed lacquer finish but are not buffed to reflect nearly as much light. However, it may just be the photography lighting setup. It really would take a close, hands on inspection to opine.

Hi Steff,

Jump right in, no worries!

Yes!, that appears to be a 677 that was purchased by GB for Home Guard use. The scope bases appear to be Winchester #8 style bases which are not quite correct (slightly higher, but fully functional). Most of the rifles used by the British Home Guard were turned back into the British Army at the end of the war and the few that remained in service sometimes got the British "Broad Arrow" marking stamped on the stock. It is possible that is what was ground-off your stock as I have a 67 example with the broad arrow stamped in that same spot.

Please buy it, or tell me where it is located 😉

Best Regards,

Yesterday I also came across an M67 that doesn’t have holes for a rear sight or front sight but does have mounting blocks. Unfortunately, the scope is missing. The inspection marks appear to be British. Something has been ground off the stock. Could this also be an M677 for the British Home Guard?

Best regards,
