Those who were willing to go to the effort of making a special order for fancy grade walnut, were also likely to go whole hog and get Winchester "piano finish" also known as French polish treatment. One of my pre-war 52 Sporting rifles has that high gloss finish. So the high gloss finish on the original rifle in question may indeed be correct.

Both the metal & the wood on the rifle in question are a bit shiny, but perhaps there was a light oiling prior to photos being taken. Not sure of differences, if any, between pre-war & post-war finishes.

What is your take on this Winchester 52B? Steel grip cap come late on the 52B? Refinished? But plate has a strange look too?

Good morning! I’m no expert on .22 ‘s by any means but I would like to add a note to this conversation concerning Ralph. I have not met him personally but I have had many, many conversations with him starting several years ago when I bought one of the first Winchesters he started to sell out of his large collection, a 1908, 1894, 30/30. Since then I’ve purchased several model 12’s and recently a model 75 Sporter. He’s not inexpensive but I found these guns to be in pristine condition, not a fingerprint on them. A lifetime of collecting from other collectors and dealers. He sent me those pictures several months ago before he listed it in GI but I’m not a .22 collector at that price. All I can vouch for is he has been very honest with me, I have no regrets in an of my purchases. Anyway just my .22 cents worth, lol.

For years, my motto has been, “You have to buy things when they’re available, not when you need them.” If I find parts for Winchester anywhere, I buy them, and that approach has served me very well over the past 20 years. There’s nothing better than needing a part and realizing you bought it 10 years ago just in case.
In my experience, you forget the price you paid within a few weeks—but you remember the missed opportunity for decades.

So true.

I have done the same thing with with parts for rifles I own (or one day hope to own) and that policy has allowed me to complete several rifles that were missing important bits.

Well done!

Unfortunately, $2,500 is completely out of the question here in Europe. But I’m very happy that I was able to restore the rifle to its original condition. By the way, it has a crosshair reticle.

The package also included a small M1900. With this addition, my .22 caliber repeating rifle collection now includes a 1900, 02, 02A, 67, 677, 68, 69A, and 72.

There are still a few missing, but they’re very hard to find here in Germany. But if you find one, they're very, very cheap.

You should buy a lottery ticket, 5.33" is the correct spacing for your 2-3/4X scope!

That means your rifle originally shipped as a G67760R with 2-3/4X scope with crosshairs or a G67766R with 2-3/4X scope with a post reticle.

You now own about a $2500+ hard to find Model 67 variation - Congrats!

Best Regards,

P.S. The bases that were on the 74 in your picture are not Winchester bases.
