As requested, good day for safe diving. One original, two shooters, all fun! Sight package on middle Target made possible by the great detail of the sight chapter of JWA’s book, his spare parts stash, some online catalog sleuthing, my parts stash, and a bit of gentle woodworking. Sporting has some of the straightest wood I’ve seen, also has a somewhat period Weaver 4X scope. I wish I had the original sights but the scope makes it a better shooter as the original rear sight was not a receiver sight. I guess they were out of pretty wood when they made this one but I like it anyway.

My first time responding to a thread on this forum. My fiance Jo and I own four of these original banners. We own two model 61, one model 62 and one Super W Speed banners and have displayed them with our gun collections at Cody recently. These banners were made in 1932 to advertise these products. If you had original banners and repro banners side by side the repros would jump out as too bright because of the enhanced brighteners and dyes used in modern post war papers. Also, most original banners will have been folded once or twice when they were mailed. Inspect the paper for wrinkles, dirt on the paper and folded corners or small tears. After all these banners are 94 years old and were meant to be thrown away.

In 1927, the "C" most likely indicated "Crucible". Th Crucible Steel Company was one of several suppliers that Winchester purchased steel from.

The chrome moly barrels were typically marked "CMS", and the Model 53 rifles with rare exception were all manufactured with Nickel Steel barrels (usually marked "MNS"). Nickel Steel was phased out with CMS (Proof Steel) beginning in April 1932 for all of the various center fire rifle models.

At this point I'm thinking that the "C", is for the Chrome Molly barrel. Somewhere in the past I thought that I saw a chart indicating the different steel that Winchester used, and maybe a chart. From memory and this M-53 being mfg. in 1927, the Chrome Molly barrel seems like it might be correct.

In speaking with the owner at the time of posting some pictures here, I did find out that he's an accomplished shooter, not far from here, at Camp Perry, Ohio, where the National Matches have been known to be held. He was dealing with some health issues and hasn't gotten back to me. He was wondering if the Custom Stock was possibly done by Griffin & Howe, (he was going to check on that), or another well known Stock and wood carver, R.G. "Bob" Owen. If either one of these are the case, the M-52 rifle, that doesn't have it's original wood Target stock on it, could possibly be a whole other story. IMO!

We here on the WACA Forum enjoy the original Winchesters, in all of their originality, that's a fact, along with the Winchester History, and with that sometimes comes pieces or examples like this one.

There's also the chance that someone made this stock up, at they're bench, as a novice wood carver with a lot of talent. IMO!

Tony

So, I'm curious if anyone here can shed some light on these 61 & 62 banners? I bought a pair of them about 15 years ago at the Tulsa show as "reproductions"... $40. for the pair... they look fine and hang in my basement. The ones now being sold on ebay are called "vintage". Several sets have been sold with "buy it now" prices at $350. per set. A few sets have sold for higher prices... I sent the seller a message asking if they were in fact, factory Winchester made or the Key's reproductions... the response came back "They have been purchased and inspected by the 5 top Winchester collectors in the US and everyone has said they are New old stock". There's a whole lot of "room" in that statement....ie: New Old Stock repro's? Anyone here one of the "top 5" collectors? I'm open to being enlightened... 🙂
