Thanks for sharing!

BRP,

You're extremely nice M-75 is very much appreciated here by us all. You're descriptions of the sights, and explaining the enhanced functions really helped me to understand their intended purposes, bringing to light this nice set up, the original owner seemed to have ordered. What a nice example.

My first time responding to a thread on this forum. My fiance Jo and I own four of these original banners. We own two model 61, one model 62 and one Super W Speed banners and have displayed them with our gun collections at Cody recently. These banners were made in 1932 to advertise these products. If you had original banners and repro banners side by side the repros would jump out as too bright because of the enhanced brighteners and dyes used in modern post war papers. Also, most original banners will have been folded once or twice when they were mailed. Inspect the paper for wrinkles, dirt on the paper and folded corners or small tears. After all these banners are 94 years old and were meant to be thrown away.

Hi Bill, thanks for your first post. Can you advise if your original banners show the model number partially covered up the same as the ones here we’re discussing from eBay? The 61 is only slightly covered at the bottom but, the 62 a lot more and I wouldn’t think they would do that 🤷🏼‍♂️

The chrome moly barrels were typically marked "CMS", and the Model 53 rifles with rare exception were all manufactured with Nickel Steel barrels (usually marked "MNS"). Nickel Steel was phased out with CMS (Proof Steel) beginning in April 1932 for all of the various center fire rifle models.

After finishing up one of the many outdoor projects that I must complete before cold weather descends on Big Sky Country, I pulled this pre-War Winchester 75 Sporting rifle out of the safe.

The serial number and the barrel date both indicate a 1939 rifle, so it is one of the earliest Sporters made.

The interesting thing about this rifle for me was the upgraded sights with which the original owner chose to equip this rifle. On the Lyman 57 E receiver sight, there is a very early Merit #3 adjustable aperture. You almost never see these tiny little Merit aperture discs today. Last one I recall seeing went for north of $100. The larger Merit discs (with the rubber flange) are quite common, but these little all steel discs are quite rare. And it works as intended, as the pics below show. The shooter dials in his perfect size opening.

The front sight is a King reflector sight, which has a tiny mirror that directs light toward the gold bead, which remains very visible through this indirect application of daylight to the bead.

These sights show that my newest pre-war 75 Sporter was owned by a very discerning sportsman, who had definite opinions about how to improve his chances in the field. I think its pretty cool to own an 87 year old rifle in such nice condition with some rarely encountered sights. Enjoy!

I agree with Bill. These are too bright and too clean to be 94 years old! eBay has a lot of scammers who create fake “vintage” items to rip off collectors. Sadly, I learned the hard way and got taken a couple times!

As requested, good day for safe diving. One original, two shooters, all fun! Sight package on middle Target made possible by the great detail of the sight chapter of JWA’s book, his spare parts stash, some online catalog sleuthing, my parts stash, and a bit of gentle woodworking. Sporting has some of the straightest wood I’ve seen, also has a somewhat period Weaver 4X scope. I wish I had the original sights but the scope makes it a better shooter as the original rear sight was not a receiver sight. I guess they were out of pretty wood when they made this one but I like it anyway.

In 1927, the "C" most likely indicated "Crucible". Th Crucible Steel Company was one of several suppliers that Winchester purchased steel from.

This reminds me of the thread about original vs reproduction factory tags. That printing looks really modern to me. I think they’re worth $40. If no one here can say they verified them. The seller is a liar.
