I think the best deer rifle of the group would be that .250-3000.

How did you get the owners to jar loose of these beauties?  Each one looks like a very tall pile of Canadian Dollars.  Far too nice for the Klondike. 

That's a very nice rack of rifles that you have assembled there. It is nice to compare a few vintage rifles of the time and take into account the historical value of such treasures.

I am privy to the flat side 95 and the first model 73!

In studying each piece at several diameters magnification, I was struck by how the dimensions of these early rifles were sized to suit the average man of the day.

The average 1900 male was 5'7" tall, weighed 140 pounds and wore a 30" sleeve. I'm not unusually tall or long-armed but, when I first shouldered a Winchester Model 1895 carbine, a .30/40 that very quickly became popular with the Texas and Arizona Rangers, the length of pull and pickle fork forearm put me in mind of my childhood Red Ryder BB gun!

I've finally concluded my own very modest group of [ all Postwar] 99s:  a 99.9% 1947 EG  in 250, a 99% 1954 EG .300, my first 99, a 90% 1951 R .300, and my last and most recent, a 99% 1973 A .250 that wears a Marlin Arms Company archive property tag. The R is scoped, I had to buy a Marble's tang for the '47 EG, and the other two wear correctly coded Redfield 70s. At my age, I need the optical help.

I am going to revive this semi-compliant thread for just one more post, as a public announcement for the benefit those who, like me, were ignorant of some important (for Savage 99 collectors) facts:
1. Cody Firearms Museum has possession of the Savage manufacturing log archives and offers letter services for Savage 1895 and 1899 and 99 rifles. This service was formerly offered by amateur historians in cooperation with Savage. Wisely, the company has since either gifted or loaned these historical documents to Cody so its staff can continue the good work. As most know, there are record gaps but Cody can advise what serial ranges are not available. 
2. For Model 99 rifles produced during the years 1949 to 1970,  the lever boss was stamped with one or two numbers identifying an inspector, followed by a letter, all inside a circle. The letter is a code for the year of manufacture. 
I have the LEVER BOSS CODE index and will furnish it to any member who PMs me his or her email address. I don't think I can attach a PDF to a forum message. I  got the index from Gemini and Googling "Savage Lever Boss Codes" would probably retrieve it, too. This code is as accurate a d.o.m. determinant as any I can think of, for the 1948 - 1970 date range.

The "RNS" is actually "BNS" and it indicates the nickel steel maker.  The oval "VP" is extremely common, as is the sideways "3" (which indicates the high-wall frame type/barrel shank size).

Letter does not show a return to the Factory.  The 7806 on the tang is also stamped into the upper channel of the stock.

Sorry, I thought you got it when you looked at it.  109325.  When I took the gun apart there is a C marked on the barrel?
  

Please send me pictures of the under barrel markings and markings on the left side of the lower tang.  The 24-inch barrel makes it a special order "short" rifle.

The only marking on the barrel that is not under the flat spring is a C.  I really don't want to remove the spring.  I will pull the stock again when I can.  One thing I forgot to tell you is the tang has a R or or maybe a K?
