If the repair is solid I'd let it be, part of the gun's history and character. I like it, seems like flatbands are coming out of the woodwork this week.

Tom,  I will be happy to help.you purge yourself of this Deadly Sin. Put those ill-gotten carbines away from you.

I keep calling it Jeff's chart but I think it has a co-author. My memory fails me.

I did in fact go down a long rabbit hole searching for original sight parts for my model 52C Sporting Rifle, of which it had been stripped. It had been consigned to a local dealer by a daughter of its deceased last owner, who didn't want guns in the house. The dealer thought it was a parts gun and I bought it for a very favorable price -- among other reasons because it wore a J3 scope in Redfield rings on a Redfield Jr. base.  The then current Fjestad Blue Book was adamant that no Model 52 Sporting Rifles were factory drilled and tapped for scopes. And the dealer believed this. 

The final piece in the puzzle was a thin brown Pachmayr pad in lieu of the checkered steel buttplate we all know and cherish. Not even a moron would do that, thought the dealer. Ergo, a parts gun. But (after I had the gun) Seewin explained it likely had the cheap plastic buttplate WRA substituted on the last Sportings off the line, including mine, a 1960 serial. The same one the Models 88 and 100 wore. The Pachmayr was an improvement. 

What I could never find was a 3279 hood, which looks like a top.hat in profile, to accommodate a very tall Redfield Full.Gold Bead front sight in the sweated-on ramp. Another Mark of the Beast. (The last Sportings did not have integral ramps. They ran out of the barrels.)

The 3279 hood is so rare nobody I know has one. So everybody uses the 3278. I don't think many people shoot their 52C sporters with iron sights, since they really were set up at the factory for scopes and the majority were sold without the Lyman 48 and Redfield FGB. I restored mine with those very sights and I can say the 3278 doesn't quite leave enough air around the bead, at least to suit me.

August 1946 to be precise.  You will need a pre-1948 butt stock.

There were actually four (4) pre-64 Winchester factory sight hoods, designated, from low to high.
#3276 for the Model 94 and others
#3277 for the 24" Model 64 and a few others
#3278 for the Model 70 except for some obsolete calibers,.and 71.
#3279 for the Model 52 Sporting
JWA has published a comprehensive chart showing measured dimensions of these except for the #3279, specimens of which nobody could find to measure. 
The #3276 and 3278 are by far the most common, although genuine WRA parts are expensive. 
Seewin has said the 3278 actually looks better on the 52 Sporting and that is what I have on my 52C Sporting. 
I would want to know whether the Ocala relicas are made of formed spring steel or if they were investment cast. My experience tells me investment cast pieces that thin are too fragile. 
  

Yes, but if you're not wanting to go down those rabbit holes, their "quickies" are pretty good quality. I couldn't speculate on the materials, but I would say they're pretty high quality given the uglier versions out there. AperturesNmore also has the best repops for the 69/72 family...Jeff turned me onto those. I'm keeping a few from both of those sellers in stock since I always seem to need one.

Is Jeff's chart in one of his books or is it floating around on here somewhere?

Thanks Tony. Like I stated in my earlier post these are not typically my thing. For one thing I can see the lack of QC in the wood to metal fit as typical of post WW2 production. And to me 94 eastern carbines are a dime a dozen. I could fill closets with them, but I like my 86's with a smattering of other stuff.

Steve, those are typically not my thing, but it was a friend and he wanted to unload them. The 25-35 came with 6 boxes of ammo. 3 modern Winchester and 3 of those Hornady leveralotion. If you knew what I paid for I might be called a crook. . My heart is not connected to these guns so IF someone thinks they might like them send a PM and we can talk. On the other hand I have wanted a 25-35, and a flat band too. So I guess im saying for what I paid for them they can sit in a safe for now, they don't eat much.

The sight hood that is beveled on both ends is original. The hood with the straight back edge is a repro.
Is the magazine tube end cap slotted or smooth on the Flat Band Carbine?
