Stan,

What you have is a Winchester Salesman Case for selling Winchester's line of Paper & Brass Shot Shells, Wads, & Primers.

I can generally date your case based on what I can make out from the shells that are in in the case and the wording lithographed on the display case. They made this style Blue Salesman Case from anywhere from 1884 to 1894. One fact that puts it in that range is the Winchester "STAR" line brand of Paper Shot Shells. They were made from 1884 - 1894. The "Rival" line brand continued until 1897. But they changed the salesman cases in 1894 when the Leader & Blue Rival shells were introduced replacing the STAR shell.

Your case appears to missing one of the salesman primer tin examples. I've seen early cases will have all of the primers with the glass see through covers, as found with your one tin. The other tins with paper labels are most likely original, as I've also seen later made cases that have the tins with paper labels as well. Your case is slightly weathered compared to some of the other cases I've seen auctioned, but being 130+ years old. The fact it exists at all is a solid plus for it.

There might be some way to date it further based on what details can be determined from the head stamps of the shells. But that is about the gest of it.

Here is an example in better condition.

Here is an example that was made after the year 1894.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Sincerely,

Maverick

I’ve said it before. eBay now sucks, it used to actually be an auction site with dollar opening bids and no reserve. Plus you used to be able to purchase guns. Let the highest bidder determine the value. Now it’s just an overpriced marketplace, like everything else, items perpetually relisted until a desperate enough sucker comes along.

Si, how does one create an actual auction website, dollar start, no reserve (most of the time)?

Having met some of the Strange Rangers in the PNW tech industry who, having been early employees and thus stock or option holders become wealthy after big public offerings drove the value of their securities into the Stratosphere -- I do not doubt the winner of this rifle could be one of them. If so, he may have considered himself formally attired, as if for a board of directors meeting.
As likely, he was a paid agent of a foundation, museum, wealthy family, or consortium of investors. When you wield that size checkbook, you can dress like the 800 pound gorilla you are to the guy at the podium.
My comments on Stanton are directly germane to provenance and relative value of the Henry discussed.

I got a sneak peek as I visited Bob and David Simmons a few weeks back in Richmond and it is definitely gonna be a great auction. Brother Bob himself has a very impressive Winchester collection and has been quite a good friend in helping me acquire some great Winchesters and other items for my commemorative museum! Bob and his son are great salt of the earth people for sure! I’m excited to bid in their auction but holding my breath the big guns don’t blow me out of the water like they did in the spring Richmond’s Auction with the Dennis Mack collection. I got a couple great items but couldn’t compete and lost out on most of my bids. To be clear though this is a Winchester memorabilia auction. I’m not sure there are any firearms in it. Good luck to all who bid!

I'd guess the depth of the cut is a function of the power of the laser beam, which is a function of the cost of the machine. There are industrial lasers that can cut one-inch cold rolled sheet steel.

The láser engraving patterns I've seen replicate the relatively large German-American-style scroll, which really needs to be done in higher relief to resemble a hand engraver's work.

Because the fine rose-and-vine English scroll work is not so deeply cut but is very profuse, I've wondered what a pattern of it would look like done by programmed láser. The patterns are so dense, the programming might require showing an AI engine the pattern and asking for a machine code translation.

One purpose of English scrollwork is to hold oil but also to conceal loss of finish. The more it's handled, the better it looks.

Conversely, the "photographic" or "3 dimensional" portraits created by a series of dots punched into the steel -- Bulino --a very expensive engraving style popularized by the Italians but now seen on some London Best exhibition guns -- will not tolerate much field use of the gun without fading away. A classic example of extreme decoration that destroys the utility of the object, like 32 LPI checkering.

I adhere to the late Jack O'Connor's opinion of gun engraving: "If it is not very well done, it is ghastly." As for classic Winchesters specifically, i like to see replicas of the old factory patterns, preferably by an expert hand, but better by well-executed láser production than by an unskilled human.

The combination of hand engraving and acid etching seen on the old Olin-Kodensha 101 shotguns I have aiways thought was pretty nicely done but more extensive than I prefer. FN hit the mark for me with the little engraved fluorishes their factory engravers put on field grade Superposed and Auto-5 shotguns.

Taste is indisputable, although the lack of it can still make others wince.
