The pin is a split pin if its the one I'm thinking about. You knock it out from the split side then remove the bushing.

I managed to get the pin out! 

The pin seems to have a sort of "crimped" side (not sure how to describe it), I tried removing it from the other side, and it came out pretty easily, though I did put a few surface marks on the pin from trying so much.

I recently got an 1886, and wanted to learn how to take it apart, this was my first try, I got to the part where I need to knock out the pin on the breech bolt that connects it to the hand lever, but the pin just won't come out, I hit it with a brass punch and hammer a few times, but it's pretty firm in there, I tried adding some clp on there and letting it soak for a bit to see if that'd loosen it, but it didn't. I hit the punch pretty hard a few times to see if maybe I was just being too soft, but the pin won't budge.

When taking it apart the carrier and carrier hook did fall out before I managed to remove the pin, but I don't think that impacts it in any way. 

I wanted to see if anyone has any tips or insight on what might be the issue before I have to take it to either a gunsmith, or a winchester repair center, which is about 2 hours from where I live. I want to make sure I don't damage it so I'm not trying to knock it out anymore.

Any insight is appreciated, and let me know if any additional info would help, thanks!

I am going to disassemble the receiver again and reinstall the retractor I am sure I put it in correctly but it doesnt hurt to redo it just in case

Yes I have done that and it almost travels far enough looking at it from inside the receiver. I have a couple other 73's and comparing the  cycling the only difference is bolt position that I can see. The hammer is in good condition and the bolt fave is not overly worn
